Get the Look: Top 10 Modern Ceiling Fans

When Lumens asked me if I’d do a dedicated ceiling fan post I jumped at the chance because I had just purchased a gorgeous new birch wood modern ceiling fan to replace the mundane white ceiling fan in our Florida condo. I even found an electrician and set up an appointment, thinking it would be installed and ready to feature today. Not a chance.

I thought I had done my homework, researching the correct ceiling fan size and controller. But there were other considerations I had overlooked. Not only was the included downrod too short for my tall room, the remote control was a wall remote, not a handheld remote.

Of course, I discovered about these deficits on two separate occasions—electrician visit #1 and electrician visit #2, after having paid rush shipping for the new downrod. Hand held remote is now en route. (By the way, used the live chat function on Lumens to remedy both of these issues, and I’m not just saying that.)

So, yes, I am going to highlight my 10 top picks for modern ceiling fans from Lumens, but I am also outlining the major issues to consider when choosing a ceiling fan, so if you’re buying scroll beyond the shopping link for tips on how to choose a ceiling fan.

How to Choose a Ceiling Fan

Room Size. The larger the room, the larger the ceiling fan you will need. A ceiling fan is measured by its blade span, which is the diameter of the circle that you see when the fan blades are in motion.

Suggested blade span sizes:
If the room is…
Under 144-square feet >> under 42-inch blade span
144-225-square feet >> 44-50-inch blade span
225-400-square feet >> over 50-inch blade span
Over 400-square feet >> over 62-inch blade span; or more than one fan

You can also do it by wall measurement:
If the length of the longest wall in your room is…
Less than 12-feet >>  36-inch blade span (or smaller)
12-15-feet >> 40-18-inch blade span
More than 15-feet >> 54-inch blade span (or more)

Ceiling Height & Pitch. If your ceiling is high you you may need to purchase a longer downrod than what is provided so that the fan can hang lower into the room. The fan is not effective in moving the air around if it is stuck at the top of the room. If you have low ceilings, look for a very short suspension rod or even a flush mount ceiling fan. (You don’t want to behead anyone.) If the ceiling is sloped, you’ll need a sloped ceiling adaptor. You should also check the ceiling angle with which the fan is compatible.

Suggested downrod lengths:
9-foot ceiling >> 6-inch downrod
10-foot ceiling >> 12-inch downrod
12-foot ceiling >> 24-inch downrod
16-foot ceiling >> 48-inch downrod
18-foot ceiling >> 60-inch downrod

Operation Methods. A fan can be operated with a pull cord (make sure you will be able to reach it), wall switch, a wall remote control, and a handheld remote control. Find out what your ceiling fan is wired for, or if it is being newly wired, what makes the most sense for your setup.

Scheming: My Spring Inspired Living Room

Find Spring Inspired Home Furnishings At Wayfair

When Wayfair asked me to create a post touting spring style, the sun was streaming through the bay windows in the living room, and I had just received the new May issue of HGTV Magazine which happens to feature our Boston condo. My favorite photograph is the one of our living room. It looks so bright, cheerful, and well, spring-like. So yes, this post is about my spring inspired living room.

Our walls have always been a spring-y shade of green. We first used this color in our dining room in Chevy Chase, and the first thing we did when we moved to Boston was paint our living room a similar shade. We’ve been here 13 years and I haven’t tired of it. And given that my office is in here, I spend a lot of time in it. That it is spring inspired space is important to me. It lifts my mood, especially during the long, gray Boston winters.

The plush, sculptural rug by Angela Adams grounds the space (we are blessed with high ceilings) and renders a lush, garden feel. The sofa is ivory, as is the woodwork; the  pillows, books, accessories, and artwork add the color. Yes, I realize the palette is somewhat limited. Flowers and planters add an occasional jolt. I don’t really subscribe to the idea that the room needs a spot of a complementary red. It’s more of a busy monochromatic effect.

Rather than start from scratch creating a spring inspired space for this post, I decided to be (I hope not too obnoxiously) self-referential and create a scheme that echoes the look and feel of my living room. And now that I have a professionally styled and photographed image, life is grand.

Finding similar pieces on Wayfair to create this spring inspired space was simple, given its array of decor and styles. My son confirms that I did a really good job, especially with the rug. Here is my scheme that recreates our spring inspired living room using items sourced on Wayfair. (Links below or in Spring Inspired Style Idea Book on Wayfair.)

Get the Look: 56 Upholstered Benches

Although our master bath is the least pleasant room in our condo, we’ve ignored it for whole time we’ve lived here. Bathroom renovations, as you know, are expensive. Instead, a few years ago we opted to reconfigure our main living space, turning the open playroom into a family room with large glass French doors to block sound, creating a proper entry and huge coat closet, adding a banquette for dining, and relocating my desk to the other side for privacy and peace.

Well, now we are finally taking on the master bathroom. We don’t have proper plans yet, but the idea is to absorb some of our long, unused hallway and decrease the actual bedroom size in order to make a large bathroom with a large bathtub. Plus a decent closet for me. (My husband has the walk-in and my stuff is scattered here and there. )

Probably we will have to lose the white cotton duck sofa that currently sits at the foot of our bed. We don’t really use it much, mostly it was so our son could sneak in at night and sleep there without disturbing us by climbing into the bed. But given that he’s 14 and 5’11” that’s no longer an issue. Probably we will replace it with an upholstered bench.

Here are 56 upholstered bench styles perfect for the bedroom or entryway. Yes, I got carried away, but this should ensure that both you and I find the upholstered bench we need.

Scheming: Neon Bedroom Decor

A friend, fixated on a khaki linen pillow with neon trim that she saw a while back, has been searching for neon accents to decorate a bedroom in a summer house. (No, neon decor isn’t dead.)

She enlisted me on a hunt for said pillows. In my guilt of being unable to produce (they’re no longer made), I assembled an alternative scheme. Here is an array of neon accents for the bedroom from StyleCarrot partners and others that are bright, fresh, and cheery.

Just In: Lumens Modern Lighting Sale Going On Now

I seem always to be researching lighting for one situation or another. (Currently I’m choosing lights to brighten up and modernize our Florida condo.) Luckily  sites like Lumens make choosing modern lighting easy, from basic fixtures to on-trend statement lighting. This StyleCarrot affiliate has asked me to create a post on its modern lighting sale, going on now. (This post is sponsored, but I am a devoted Lumens customer.)

The Lumens lighting sale offers 40+ modern lighting brands at up to 40% off.  I’ve combed every lighting category in the sale for my favorite picks for modern chandeliers, modern pendant lights, modern sconces, flush mount fixtures, table lamps, floor lamps, and more, from brands and designers including Artemide, Tom Dixon, Muuto, Sonneman, Flos, and others.

Some of them I have been coveting for years, others I am lucky enough to own. I helped a friend choose #1 for the playroom in her Manhattan apartment and it looks fantastic —clean, curvy lines with some shine. I really wanted to install #3 in our house on the Cape, but had to go with something less expensive; I still love it though. I’m a sucker for anything resembling gray flannel or concrete so #4 is a fun fave (plus I got to visit the Muuto offices on a press trip to Copenhagen).

Speaking of Danish Design, the matte black sconce (#13) by Arne Jacobsen for Louis Poulsen is a longtime classic. And I’d definitely label #7, Tom Dixon’s copper pendant, a newfound classic lighting option. And one more… I included #8—spare brass sconces with a white glass globe— by contemporary lighting design master Michael Anastassiades in a design mockup for my family room makeover (see “related posts” at the bottom). This could be the perfect opportunity to purchase a pair.

Here are my 15  favorite modern lighting styles from the Lumens lighting sale.
