ARTmonday: Elephants in Art

The elephant is the season’s “it” animal in interiors and the arts. I’m seeing them everywhere, from the stage to indie films, in shelter mags and in the shops. The elephant is not new to the style scene. Iconic examples of the beast have been around a while. Here’s a quick look at select elephants  in the arts. Tomorrow I have a montage of elephants incorporated in decor, and on Wednesday, some cute pachyderms for sale. If you’re eager for an immediate glimpse of rooms and items, check out  “Trendlet Alert: Elephants” on The Inside Source.

ARTmonday: Holly Irwin

Artist Holly Irwin wrote to me last week to say she’s a new Style Carrot fan. I’m now a fan of her paintings, especially these dreamy images of women in full skirts. Irwin lives and paints in a seaside village in Alabama and is represented by Lagerquist Gallery in Atlanta, Loretta Goodwin Gallery in Birmingham, and Lyons Share Gallery in Fairhope, Alabama.

ARTmonday: Susanna Maing

Got an email this morning from Specific, a new design store in L.A. (probably worth its own post) about an exhibit of new works by artist  Susanna Maing, who shows Angles Gallery, which also represents Polly Apfelbaum.

ARTmonday: Jessica Biales Photo Collage

I just reconnected with a dear friend, Jessica Biales. Last we spoke, she was a single attorney in New York City. Multiple years, guys, and cities (even countries) later, she has a super husband, beautiful daughter, and has turned her passion for photography into a full-fledged pursuit.  Her photo collages, many aimed towards children, are playful but not babyish, with crisp images depicting whimsical images (calico elephants anyone?) in realistic settings. These are my favorites:

Elephants in Central Park, 2009
photo collage – archival digital c print (limited edition)

Ducks in Central Park, 2009

ARTmonday: Kimberly Hart at Mixed Greens Gallery

I came across a blurb I pulled out of Lucky about Mixed Greens Gallery while I was diligently clearing out my file cabinet last night. The mixed media works/installations of Kimberley Hart caught my eye, probably because taxidermy is so everywhere-you-look right now. These are fabrications, not the real thing.

Magnolia, 2008
Framed acrylic painting with Sculpey snare and wood scaffolding

Decoys, 2006
