ARTmonday: Finn Juhl’s Art Collection

Richard Mortensen

Last week I was in Copenhagen for the first time on a press trip with VisitDenmark/Wonderful Copenhagen, compliments of Design Milk. One of the highlights was a visit to the home of Finn Juhl, Danish mid-century modern furniture designer and architect. You are likely familiar with his iconic Pelican chair and Poet sofa (now produced by Onecollection and available in the U.S. through DWR). He is also known for his design of the Trusteeship Council in the UN building in NYC.

Finn Juhl’s house, Kratvaenget 15, built 1941—42

In 1942, Finn Juhl and his first wife, Inge-Marie Skaarup, built a house in Ordrup, designed by Juhl. They hung many works by Danish art painters of the time: Lundstrøm, Richard Mortensen, Eigill Jacobsen, Robert Jacobsen, and others. I’ll post photographs of the house later, but right now I today I thought it would be fun to see his art collection. I wish I could identify the artists; I will write to the press person at the museum and add the attributions when/if I get them. UPDATED: I found the brochure I brought home with me which identifies the artwork.

ARTmonday: School of Museum of Fine Arts Sale

The School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston Art Sale, featuring works from students, alumni, and faculty to benefit the scholarship program will be held December 8 -11, 2011 at the school, which is right next to the museum. I will certainly post images of artwork I see on opening night, but in the meantime, here are some of our SMFA sale acquisitions from the last several years. Can you tell which are mine and which are my husband’s picks?

ARTmonday: Venice Biennale 2011

On our second day in Venice we took a guided tour of the Biennale. While I’ve visited Venice before, I’d never been to the art exhibit; needless to say I was thrilled. La Biennale takes place in Venice every two years (hence the name). Foscarini, which is a sponsor of the festival, hosted us on a stroll through some of the 30 permanent national pavilions in the city’s Giardini (public gardens) as well as a guided tour of the “ILLUMInations” exhibit in the Venetian Arsenal. Below are the highlights from the Arsenale, which features 83 artists from around the world. Here’s a glimpse of what I saw:

ARTmonday: Ginette La Palme

Artist Ginette La Palme is an artist and illustrator who lives with a tiger-striped cat named Washington in Toronto. While her portfolio is mostly filled with offbeat watercolors and drawings of cartoon-like characters, from grinning tree trunks and teapots to hide-and-go-seek kitties, I’m fixated on these brightly decorated twigs. They’re inspiring a walk through the woods and a trip to an art supply store.

ARTmonday: Quercus Designs’ Beach Object Photographs

Yesterday I finally caught up with miles of blog posts on Remodelista. I found a few items I must have, including the work of Jennifer Steen Booher, who photographs natural object assemblages under the name Quercus Designs. I purchased two 12x12s (the first two shown here) from her Etsy shop, and plan to hang them in our house on  the Cape. The silhouetted specimens in each of the arrays have a crisp sparseness, that I think, along with the colors, that work really well. So simple, but very satisfying. She writes about her work — where she found the tokens and such — on her blog. Bar Harbor Yacht Club, May 29, 2011
