ARTmonday: 15 Picks from Rise Art

Rise Art contacted me last month, drawn to the photography choices I made in my ARTmonday post, “Figures In the Landscape.” They asked me to curate a collection, which I worked on this weekend and they will publish later this week. My theme will be some sort of personal take on the impending spring.

Rise Art offers artwork for sale that is curated by its team, sourced from artists in graduate degree programs, galleries, and museums. You can browse freely, or take its art style quiz for guidance. For today’s post here, I chose 15 completely random artworks for Rise Art that caught my eye. I’ve included a mix of mediums (photography, collage, paper cuts) as well as genres (portraiture, landscape, abstract, still life). And I definitely found some artists I’ll focus on in more details in the coming months.

ARTmonday: Naomi Okubo

Naomi Okubo is a Japanese artist who is currently spending a few months in New York City. She is interested in the relationship between people in advanced cultures, like the U.S. and Japan, and their relationships with fashion and their appearance, since many do not have concerns about real necessities like housing and food. Certainly, her detailed portraits of girls in floral dresses lounging in homes and gardens with  Oriental rugs and boho-patterned pillows focus on the rich color and pattern of material goods.

ARTmonday: Jenny Prinn

I noticed last week that Jenny Prinn, who describes herself as “mommy, artist, and stylist,” started following StyleCarrot on Instagram. (I’ve been trying to beef up my account, so I hope you’ll give me a follow too.)  When I clicked through to Jenny Prinn’s Instagram, I was thrilled to discover that she’s a Maine artist whose work I’d admired on Serena & Lily

Jenny Prinn’s abstracts are colorful and uplifting. Some are truly abstract; others are abstracted landscapes. Her statement says she is “intrigued by the fleeting moments and feelings in life that are often overlooked or forgotten.” She creates “the small pulsing, transient moments and sensations that strike deep within our core for just a moment and then are gone.” She works in acrylic and mixed media on canvas.

The artwork is beautiful, and the prices accessible. Most of these are still (at the moment) available for purchase. (I may need one for the Delray Beach condo.)

ARTmonday: Figures in the Landscape

I think we’ve already established that I’m enamored of images picturing women lying in a field, wading into water, curled up in a corner, or moodily attending to some undefined task. Today’s images are first and foremost, landscapes, then dotted with a single woman, man, or child, group, or crowd. The vistas range from grassy lawn to corn field and from rocky cliff to rubble. They all capture a mood; many peaceful or relaxed, at least one determined, another possible agitated, and others simply unbothered. I think the common thread here, is individuals carrying on with their lives, in outdoor settings. No more than that, than perhaps a certain aura they have, to me.

ARTmonday: Cig Harvey

Thanks to the Artsy newsletter, I discovered a new photographer last week who I love, love, love—Cig Harvey.  And she’s kind of local. Cig Harvey lives in a farmhouse in the Midcoast of Maine. She was an assistant professor at the Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University for ten years, but recently took a leap of faith to devote her life to “purely making things.” Good choice.

Her images are visually crisp, but the subject matter a bit mysterious and at times moody. She uses herself as the subject, as well as children (hers?). They’re right up my alley, and would have fit into numerous posts I’ve done, like “Girls at Play,” and runs in the same vein as women photographers I’ve highlighted, such as Anastasia Cazabon and Rhi Ellis.

The Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, the Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland, Maine, and the International Museum of Photography all have her work in its collections. She is represented by Robert Klein Gallery in Boston, Dowling Walsh Gallery in Rockland, Robin Rice Gallery in NYC, and Kopeikin Gallery in L.A. I hope my collection will include a Cig Harvey at some point oo.
