ARTmonday: 20 Fun Food Artworks

With all the food art I perused to put together last week’s 20 Autumnal Artworks in honor of Thanksgiving along with the post I did for Matouk, Appreciating Autumn Through Art, I noticed there were quite a few examples of humorous, fun food artworks. You may not want to eat anything after this weekend, but there’s no harm in looking. Some of it may even inspire you to try snapping fun food artworks yourself, at least on Instagram.

ARTmonday: 16 Autumnal Artworks

I feel like fall just started, but really we’re fast heading into winter, with a few frigid days already behind us. The leaves too, are almost gone. The spectacular array of golds, reds, and oranges continue to amaze, despite having spent every single one of my autumns in a four-season zone. Even driving the kids to and from school is made better by the autumnal artwork outside my windshield.

I remember, though when I took the fall foliage for granted. (Gasp.) Obviously I didn’t think much about the pretty color leaves growing up in Connecticut. Sure, I pressed brilliant red leaves between sheets of waxed paper, and probably made leaf turkeys, too, but beyond that, didn’t give fall foliage a thought. Until college.

At Connecticut College, one of my closest friends, Jessica Biales (I’ve previously blogged about her children’s artwork and stunning gold jewelry), went cuckoo over the changing leaves. She would exclaim and effuse about their beauty, leaving me as baffled as my kids probably are when I point out the amazing leaf colors along the Charles River. She wasn’t from a tropical clime.

Rather, Jessica is a New York City girl through and through, with a deep appreciation for the autumn foliage that wasn’t quite as vibrant out her bedroom window along the East River, or in Central Park. I get it now. I guess good things do come with age.

Today’s roundup features 20 autumnal artworks, from an acrylic of golden birches to a desert landscape photo to Central Park in fall, seen from Columbus Circle. There’s also a  homey kitchen, plus fall harvest still lifes, and an abstract or two in perfect fall hues. I also pulled together a similar collection for the blog on Matouk, which I’ll link to when it goes up. Enjoy not just these autumnal artworks, but the real art of autumn outside your windows.

ARTmonday: Sneak Peek into the SMFA Art Sale 2014

The SMFA Art Sale 2014 starts this Thursday. It’s also known as the Museum School Art Sale—the art sale that takes place every year at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (SMFA), the renown art school adjacent to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston that has been influential part of the Boston art scene since it’s founding in 1876.

There are thousands of pieces of art for sale, hung throughout the galleries on the first floor, and shrink wrapped in bins in the central space. (It’s always fun to flip through and discover amazing finds, whether it’s and inexpensive piece by a student (I once scored tiny abstracts for $12; I often find photos I love for around $100) or additional work by artists whose work is hung in the galleries. Once a piece is sold, it comes off the wall and is immediately replaced by another piece, so the display is in constant rotation.

The Museum School Art Sale offers art in every price range and medium, including oil paintings, acrylic paintings, watercolor paintings, photography, textile art, sculpture, video art (I would love to buy a piece; I still think about one we passed up), ceramics, and jewelry. Pieces are done by SMFA students, alumni, faculty, and affiliated artists. Famous SFMA alums include Cy Twombly, William Barnett, Jim Dine, Ellsworth Kelly, Nan Goldin, and Doug and Mike Starn, many of which have pieces at the sale (and most of which are way out of my price range, obviously).

Each piece at the Museum School Art Sale is priced by the artists, with a fifty/fifty split between the artists and the School. Artwork sold to benefits student scholarships at the School of Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. The SMFA Art Sale 2014 takes place this Thursday to Sunday, November 20, 2014 to November 23, 2014. The hours are 10am-8pm the first three days and Sunday until five.

Here’s a sneak peek of  20 pieces for sale at this year’s Museum School Art Sale. At the end I included links to the posts I did about past years’ Museum School Art Sales. Also, if you’re interested, these are pieces that I’ve purchased at the SMFA Art Sales over the last few years.

ARTmonday: Boston International Fine Art Show

The Boston International Fine Art Show is this week, Thursday, November 13, 2014 to Sunday, November 16, 2014 at The Cyclorama, Boston Center for the Arts in Boston’s South End. Approaching 50 exhibitors, including many local greater Boston area and New England galleries, the BIFAS showcases historic, modern, and contemporary artworks.

Among the galleries exhibiting artwork at BIFAS are the South End’s Adelson Galleries, Newbury Street’s Newbury Fine Art and Vose Galleries,  Beacon Hill’s Sloane Merrill Gallery, Gloucester’s Trident Gallery, and Portsmouth’s The Banks Gallery. It’s a manageable show, in a venue that gets sunlight, with enough good work that makes it worth stopping by. (I have that on good authority from a friend/serious collector.)

The Gala Preview is this Thursday, benefiting Friends of the Boston Park Rangers Mountain Unit. There’s a New Collectors Salon on Friday evening, and Peter Trippi, Editor-in-Chief of Fine Art Connoisseur will speak on Saturday afternoon.
