ARTmonday: 10 Pieces from Art in Giving

Hilary Tait Norod, a talented up and coming artist with whom I collaborate in the Webster Art Project told me about a charitable endeavor she is supporting called Art in Giving. The foundation, based in Boston’s Fort Point neighborhood, raises funds for childhood cancer research.

More than 60 artists and galleries participate in Art in Giving, donating up to 50 percent of the proceeds from the sale of art to The Rachel Molly Markoff Foundation. Its mission is dedicated to pediatric cancer research and programs to help families cope with childhood cancer.

While individuals are welcome to purchase these pieces, the organization targets art buyers, real estate developers, architects and interior designers, and others who might place art in public buildings and corporate offices. In some cases pieces hang in institutions and are still for sale. Gift certificates are also available.

Here are ten artworks from Art in Giving that I particularly love.

ARTmonday: Cactus Paintings

Before we get to the cactus paintings, I want to tell you a little cactus story.

Last summer I was surprised to find cacti growing in the sand along the parking spaces at a small beach in Truro on the Cape. It looked as though  someone planted them on a retaining wall, and they spread to the ground, or rather, the beach. I can’t believe I never noticed them before. Could they all have grown over a single year?

They were quite rugged; pale green with short but very coarse and sharp spines. I had to have one. It was a lot more difficult to pull it up than I thought, and I was treated to lots of little prickly stuff in my fingers. (Because I’m not careful like that.) I brought a little one home, stuck it in a small pot with some sandy dirt, and left it on the porch.

A few months ago my husband was out there and brought it home, thinking winter would surely not serve this cactus well. (I will be curious to see how all the cacti in the parking lot look this summer.) We put it in a sunny spot on the back windowsill, and while the original plant didn’t look very healthy, it sprouted.

The new growth is green and very tall; three times the size of the original plant. I replanted it in store-bought cactus/succulent soil in a larger pot. If the cleaning people would stop watering it, I suspect it will grow to be very strong. (It’s currently kind of droopy, with a chopstick holding it up.) I’m kind of amazed. Nature.

ARTmonday: Hilary Tait Norod

I first learned about Boston-based artist Hilary Tait Norod through her dad, an architect at Elkus Manfredi when I was working on a story for the Boston Globe about transforming old buildings into home.

Since then I’ve had the pleasure of working with her on the  Webster Art Project at Boston Design Center. There are currently three of her paintings in the Webster & Company showroom (one sold!)

Hilary Tait Norod’s solos show “Are You Crazy With Me?” opens this weekend, Saturday, April 16th, 5pm – 9pm at Jerome Street Studios in Medford, Mass. Hilary’s new body of work is inspired by studies of the human mind. The series focuses  specifically on the theories behind the correlation between insanity and creativity.

Norod presents a series of mixed media paintings that evolved from portraiture studies of brilliant minds who have walked the line of insanity into more abstract pieces of her own theories, experiences, and explorations.

Here is a preview of her new paintings:

Poe

Men have called me mad; but the question is not yet settled, whether madness is or is not the loftiest intelligence– whether much that is glorious– whether all that is profound– does not spring from disease of thought– from moods of mind exalted at the expense of the general intellect. —Edgar Allen Poe

ARTmonday: 15 Pieces from the MassArt Auction 2016

On Saturday night I went to Montserrat College of Art Artageous30! auction. Of course we came home with two pieces, but more importantly we had a really great time, and hopefully the school raised a lot of scholarship money.

The venue and food were terrific, as were the artists who worked throughout the space during the evening. We’re definitely going back next year, despite the schlep up to Gloucester. I’m hoping we can round up a whole Boston contingent. Perhaps a party bus?

In the meantime, I’m gearing up for the MassArt Auction this Saturday, April 9th, 2016. It will also be my first time attending this one. I can tell already it is going to be nearly impossible to come home empty handed, though I hear the prices can get steep. Tickets to the event are sold out, but you can easily bid online at Paddle8. I certainly already started.

Here are 15 of my top picks at the MassArt Auction this year. Online bidding ends Friday, April 8th; bids transfer to live event unless you choose the Buy It Now option.

ARTmonday: Montserrat College of Art Artrageous!30 Auction

If you’ve been reading ARTmonday regularly you know I am a devotee of the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston art sale.  I have yet to attend the MassArt Auction, but with my new burgeoning curatorial career I am very excited to go to this year’s art auction on April 9, 2016.

I am also thrilled to have been invited to the Montserrat College of Art Artrageous!30 Auction, which is this Saturday, April 2, 2016 in Gloucester. Montserrat College of Art is an accredited art school in Beverly, Mass., on the North Shore.

There are 16 pieces in the live auction, including work by my friends Lee Essex Doyle and Tess Atkinson (who is part of the Webster Art Project I curate). I saw many of these artworks a few weeks ago on exhibit at NAGA Gallery on Newbury Street and they’re quite wonderful. You can check out my @stylecarrotcurates Instagram for some installation shots. They’re tagged #artrageous30.

The silent auction includes over 120 artworks, including abstracts, landscapes, photography, collage, sculpture, etc. My absolute favorite piece is She thought it was love but it turns out to be adult onset ADD by Marcia Hermann, below.

Throughout Artrageous!, Montserrat students and faculty will create artworks live while you watch. Questions are encouraged, and all works will be available to bid on as they are made. In addition, there are 200 raffle tickets on sale for $100 each. The winner gets to choose any item from the live or silent auction.

The pieces are all online, though to bid you either need to attend or contact Montserrat for a bidder proxy. All proceeds raised at Artrageous!30 help provide funding for financial aid for Montserrat students.

Here are my top 15 picks from the Montserrat College of Art Artrageous!30 Auction.
