Shopping Trip: Portobello Road

No, I didn’t pop off to London. I wish. But I did make it to Chestnut Hill and finally (finally!) checked out the Portobello Road boutique. It’s owned by two local women with wanderlust and exquisite taste, Marina Kalb and Kristina Lyons. It’s their private version of Anthropologie. It works.

They hit the trends nicely – Union Jack, succulents, gnarled wood bench, and other on-point picks all made a showing. They even have fresh flowers in inventive arrangements. In addition to home goods (LOVE the John Robshaw bedding), there’s fine art, clothing, jewelry, paper goods, and goodies for kids.

Montage: 22 Spaces with Sheepskin Throws

It makes sense that so many taste makers strew sheepskin throws on the furniture. Whether it’s to reinforce the cozy in an already dressed down space, soften a room that’s bit too sleek, or add texture to a monochromatic palette, the shaggy skins are undeniably a nice touch.

I was immediately drawn to the gray sheepskins that are thrown over the chairs in the third photo down. I could do that, I thought. I had seen the curly gray versions at IKEA. They’d make the perfect touch on my new gray sofa in the family room. At once inviting and edgy. So tempting. Until I thought about it. How many times a day do I replace the pillows and blankets that litter the floor? Did I want to add to the chore? Not so much. Oh well.

Maybe it’d work on my all white bed. Who am I kidding? I don’t make my bed . . .

Montage: 17 Spaces with Sheepskin Rugs

Although I’m not a big animal skin fan, I do love the cozy feel of a woolly sheepskin rug underfoot. I recently went to IKEA and picked up one each for my sons’ bedrooms; now it’s the first thing their little feet hit when they touch the floor. (I was tempted by the gray versions for the sofa, but more on that tomorrow.) One of my sons pleaded the extra large one, so he could put it atop his bed so he could sleep directly on it, but I thought things would get a little too sweaty. I think I may need one for my side of the bed on the Cape. They really do feel delicious.

Shopping Trip: Fig in Westport, CT

We always visit family in Westport, Connecticut over the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. In addition to catching up with everyone, I manage to find time to shop. This year, in addition to the usual stocking up on staples at J.Crew, I purchased a new duvet for our bedroom, which is in the process of a glorious redesign.

The duvet, by Matouk, is white with a grey border. It’s from Fig, a shop right off Main Street in downtown Westport. Fig is filled with linens and pillows by John Robshaw, Kelly Wearstler, Sferra, Matouk, Missoni, and others. I wound up chatting for a while with the owner, Carlin, who has great taste, and even offered to bring me on a behind-the-scenes tour at the Matouk factory. I may just take her up on it.
