Get the Look: Upholstered Swivel Chairs In Every Color

This Sunday was the last 2014 Boston Globe Magazine home decor issue. The theme was “Make It Your Own.” I wrote a several features for it (I will blog about La Tartine Gourmande blogger Bea Peltre’s colorful home soon and well as a South End condo with industrial style decor.) They’re two of my all time favorite spaces about which I’ve written.

In addition to the features, I put together the StyleWatch product page, which highlighted seven colorful upholstered swivel chairs. Swivel chairs are a perennial favorite of interior designers. A pair of swivel chairs can bridge the two separate conversation areas in an oversize living room. In the family room, swivel chairs can face either the sofas or the television, allowing for multi-function flexibility. Designer Alys Protzman, who decorated this yellow and white cottage on Cape Cod, likes to place a cluster of swivel chairs around a table to create an entire seating area that delights kids and adults. (Spin, spin, spin.)

There are lots of different types of swivel chairs available for living spaces, including mod styles on pedestals. Other than the one Jonathan Adler swivel chair I included here (because I just couldn’t resist it), these upholstered swivel chairs resemble traditional easy chairs that one would not expect to rotate. These upholstered swivel chairs would work in any room, whether to serve two functions near a television or open kitchen, or used as a reading chair by a window in the bedroom. (Or just use it to pile clothing on and swivel it away from you when it becomes overloaded.)

Here are 45 upholstered swivel chairs in every color as well as some patterns.

Get the Look: Reclaimed Wood Bedroom Furniture

Continuing with yesterday’s theme of reclaimed wood furniture, specifically, beds made from reclaimed wood, today, we’re rounding out the bedroom with reclaimed wood dressers, stools, nightstands, chests, bookshelves, and benches Again, the look is inspired by Monday’s Design Diary post, “Hutker Architects Goes Graphic On Martha’s Vineyard,”

Reclaimed and/or rustic pieces can add texture to a crisply modern white space, blend into a well-patina’d industrial loft, or mix easily with early colonial and naif folk styles. Of course reclaimed wood furnishings are also at home among vintage finds. Don’t use too much of it. One piece in a room, or a few sprinkled throughout the house, does the trick.

Here are 20 pieces of reclaimed wood bedroom furniture.

Get the Look: 20 Rustic Reclaimed Wood Beds

Yesterday’s Design Diary, “Hutker Architects Goes Graphic On Martha’s Vineyard,” featured an airy, pale blue master bedroom with a cathedral ceiling that the homeowners furnished with a simple reclaimed wood platform bed and plank-front reclaimed pine nightstands that they ordered from the Sundance Catalog.

The rustic style wood pieces work particularly well in this bedroom in that they help bridge the outdoor space of the deck with the interior. The bold graphic rug reiterates the clean, modern design, providing a satisfying juxtaposition of texture and style.

Today I’ve pulled together a collection of 20 beds with a rustic feel, most created from actual reclaimed wood (though a few are just executed in a reclaimed woods style.) The sources range from well-known favorites that include West Elm and Crate & Barrel, some popular e-retailers, such as Burke Decor, a great site that sells amazing consignment pieces, called Chairish, and a couple of well-priced English sites, like FurniturePlus, for those abroad.

Montage: 20 Vintage Bathroom Vanities

I tend to skew towards a modern aesthetic and certainly in the bathroom, where function, ease, and cleanliness is crucial. A year ago (it feels like yesterday), I posted  Montage: 20 Bathrooms with Modern Vanities along with Get the Look: 28 (Mostly) Modern Bathroom Vanities, precipitated by my lamenting our atrocious pink and nude bathroom in Delray Beach. (Yeah, I know, a flesh-toned Florida bathroom is better than no Florida bathroom!)

There are so many modern vanity options—I particularly like this style of natural wood modern bathroom vanity that hangs on the wall. Of course, I’m always up for a classic white marble bathroom too. If we ever redo the Boston bathroom (my biggest home decor wish), that’s probably the way we’ll go, given the style in these parts.

Today I thought I’d play with a more vintage look, at least here on the blog. Designers who favor an antique, country, or rustic feel, often use a chest, console, or other interesting cabinet as a bathroom vanity. While an old chest could be annoying, with sticking drawers and peeling paint, a console table with a shelf running along the bottom is a great idea, since it provides storage for towels or baskets, without being blocky.

Here are 20 examples of vintage bathroom vanities that still manage to look fresh.

Get the Look: 20 Modern Outdoor Water Fountains

Back in December, The Spa at the Mandarin Oriental Boston treated me to the luxurious Frankincense Massage Ritual. It was only the second time I had visited the spa, having not been there since the hotel opened several years ago, and it was just as perfect as I remembered. The whirlpool, steam room, and tropical shower are all heavenly, and the treatment itself was superb.

As with all treatments, the Frankincense started with ritual foot cleansing, spices, and the sound of cymbals.  Then a relaxing massage for which the therapist used De Stress Mind Body Oil, concocted with a blend of wild chamomile, frankincense and petitgrain oils. The treatment finishes with deep inhalations of the Frankincense essential oils and a soothing scalp massage. The experience, as you might imagine, was heavenly.

It made me think of how I would love the sound of an outdoor water feature on Cape Cod. Since a minimalist creation designed by a landscape architect is not really an option given the cost, I looked into possible alternatives. While many of the widely available outdoor water fountains are not necessarily cutting-edge modern, there are those with a contemporary aesthetic that would nestle into one’s garden or anchor a patio quite nicely.

Then, you could invite a massage therapist over for a treatment outdoors. The gentle trickle of your own fountain beats Enya from a portable speaker any day.
