Get the Look: Upholstered Swivel Chairs In Every Color

This Sunday was the last 2014 Boston Globe Magazine home decor issue. The theme was “Make It Your Own.” I wrote a several features for it (I will blog about La Tartine Gourmande blogger Bea Peltre’s colorful home soon and well as a South End condo with industrial style decor.) They’re two of my all time favorite spaces about which I’ve written.

In addition to the features, I put together the StyleWatch product page, which highlighted seven colorful upholstered swivel chairs. Swivel chairs are a perennial favorite of interior designers. A pair of swivel chairs can bridge the two separate conversation areas in an oversize living room. In the family room, swivel chairs can face either the sofas or the television, allowing for multi-function flexibility. Designer Alys Protzman, who decorated this yellow and white cottage on Cape Cod, likes to place a cluster of swivel chairs around a table to create an entire seating area that delights kids and adults. There are lots of different types of swivel chairs available for living spaces, including mod styles on pedestals. Other than the one Jonathan Adler swivel chair I included here (because I just couldn’t resist it), these upholstered swivel chairs resemble traditional easy chairs that one would not expect to rotate. These upholstered swivel chairs would work in any room, whether to serve two functions near a television or open kitchen, or used as a reading chair by a window in the bedroom. (Or just use it to pile clothing on and swivel it away from you when it becomes overloaded.)

Just In: Novogratz x Walmart Bedding Collaboration

Husband and wife design duo Bob and Cortney Novogratz are at it again. There latest effort is the 9 by Novogratz bedding and bath collection at Walmart. The line includes bedding, beds, and bath accessories in their signature bright, geometric pops of color. The pieces are great for kids—the couple have seven of their own—and extra vibrant grownups.

Bob and Cortney Novogratz masterfully layer pattern and color, but of course the throw pillows, shams, duvets, towels, and shower curtains work perfectly as accents . The collection also includes furniture—painted metal beds, upholstered beds and headboards in stripes and solids, tufted storage ottomans, solid color sofas, and chevron armchairs.

In addition to the 9 by Novogratz bedding and bath collection at Walmart, there’s the Novogratz dinnerware collection at Macy’s with brightly patterned dishes, and the Novogratz collection at CB2 with more eclectic home furnishings. They even have a television show, “Home by Novogratz” on HGTV. Yeah, they are pretty busy and creative energy abounds.

Get the Look: 28 Modern Platform Beds

I feel like it’s been a while since I’ve done a furniture roundup, and since I’ve been thinking about mattresses, namely going up to a king on Cape Cod, where we have a platform bed, I settled on pulling together modern platform beds. We have a gorgeous white oak contemporary platform bed that we purchased before the house was done. We used the wood sample as inspiration for the white oak floors. We’re always bumping into its sharp corners though.

Everybody seems to be obsessed with upholstered headboards these days (I have one of those too, a white slipcovered upholstered bed from Pottery Barn), but I prefer the clean lines of a modern platform bed. As stylish furniture goes, a platform bed is clean, simple, and functional. Scheming: Patterned Rugs for the Living Room in Florida

As you know, I’ve been fixing up our condo in Florida. Now that the walls are white, the cork flooring is installed, and the furniture is in place, it’s time to start thinking about rugs. Colorful patterned rugs.

Safavieh Moroccan Rug

I love the naturalistic, mountain design as well as the colors. It’s inspired by the classic Beni Ourain rugs woven by nomadic tribes in Morocco’s Atlas mountain region, but doesn’t feel too of-the-moment thanks to its white and pink palette. It’s a top choice. Plus, my 12-year old son, and more importantly, my husband, are ok with it.

It’s a knotted piece that’s 80 percent viscose and 20 percent cotton, which gives me some pause. Anybody have experience with viscose rugs in terms of durability and feel?

Safavieh Tiny Diamond Rug

I chose this for it’s coral color and small scale, subtle pattern. (I’m kind of over large scale, bold geometrics.) It’s listed as being part of a bath mat collection, though comes is full room sizes. It’s cotton, from India, and looks wonderfully soft.

Surya Bombay Floral Rug

This ivory rug with its bold hot pink bloom could be really fun. Almost like having another pillow and/or artwork on the floor. It’s a tufted rug in 100 percent, hand-spun New Zealand wool and there are plenty of sizes to choose from.

My husband probably isn’t all that keen on it, (it IS quite the explosion of pink), so I’m going to put the aqua version in rotation as a choice for the bedroom.

Jaipur Rugs Maroc Tribal Rug

I was planning to avoid the been-there, done-that ikats, but this particular design appeals to me for its simple, blurred-edge pattern and soft coral color scheme. It’s a flat-woven wool rug from India, which means its reversible, durable, and really well priced.

Capel Fortress Trellis Rug

A more geometric take on a Moroccan style Beni Ourain rug. This one handmade in India from knotted 100 percent wool. I like the subtle color palette, which, along with the orderly pattern, works well with the colorful artwork and accessories. Top contender for sure, and again, my son and husband like it too.

nuLOOM Moderna Morderna Ombre Rug

This 100 percent tufted wool from India is probably too pink for the rest of the family, but I love ombré. I especially like the dot string pattern that runs across half of it. Another problem: it’s only available in a tiny size.

Capel Cococozy Twirl Rug + Surya Frontier Ikat Rug

I know, I know, I said I was over geometric and global prints. I totally am, but couldn’t resist layering these bold designs. The larger twirl pattern rug is made with knotted 100 percent New Zealand semi-worsted wool with an Indo-Tibetan weave, and the ikat is a woven flat weave wool rug from India.

It’s probably better to have the flat woven on the bottom, but I’m not really going with this scheme, as fun as it is.

LR Resources Natural Fiber Rug

Wayfair has a pretty varied assortment of natural jute and sisal rugs too. This one is a bit on the red side, but I really like the pattern. The price points on the jute and sisal rugs are quite good, but I think we want to be cozier in the living room. However, there’s an interesting jagged chevron jute rug that resembles deep teal ocean waves that I’m considering for the boys’ room.

Get the Look: Modern Watering Cans

A watering can is one of those things you don’t think of having (or have room for) when you live in the city. (Or maybe you do, if you’re all green thumb-y.) A while back, I fell in love with a sleek, stainless steel watering can at MoMA (no longer available), that I received as a holiday gift. The long, skinny spout, great for filling vases around the house, is als, not conducive to city-size cabinets, so it lives on the Cape.

I have been thinking of getting another one that’s more compact for Boston (love the copper X3 by Kontextur, though the Born In Sweden watering can is more practical and comes in excellent colors.) I actually don’t have an outdoor watering can on the Cape, which I think I should get if I have any hope of growing anything this summer, which I kinda do. (Shocking, I know.)
