Just In: MoMA’s Destination: Design NYC Collection

This spring’s Destination: Design series is MoMA’s eleventh. The Destination: NYC collection features 200 products by both established and up-and-coming designers based in New York City, and all are manufactured in the US. The collection launched in MoMA Design Stores in New York and Japan, and online last week. My picks below. You can also click back to last year’s roundup of items from Destination: Mexico.

Site Spotlight: Idyll Home

Idyll Home is a British webshop offering a tightly curated collection of home furnishings and decor that have a vintage modern aesthetic, infused with a bit of the rustic and industrial. I hadn’t come across it until this morning, when proprietor Claire Krier sent me a note. I happened to need a quick topic to blog on this morning, so was psyched to see her darling offerings. Idyll Home is based in the Staffordshire countryside. Krier searches out things that aren’t in every shop, including ethical and recycled products. Lines include American meets Indian favorite John Robshaw, Danish brands Tine K and House Doctor, and Dutch tabletop company Jansen + Co. Below are a dozen pieces from Idyll Home that I’d love to own.

Just In: Design by Sir Terence Conran for JCPenney

Conran & Company for JCPenney

Brit design great Sir Terence Conran of Conran & Company has entered into a partnership with the very American retailer JCPenney. Obviously its following wannabe-thought-of-as-high-end collab happy Target, though this enterprise is meant to be long term. The collection is called Design by Conran for JCPenney, and the first wave of products (58 on the website) just launched in approximately 300 JCP stores (apparently monogram monikers are the way to go these days) and online. It doesn’t seem to be getting much hype, or maybe I’m just sorely out of the loop somehow, but the products are fantastic looking. So much so, I’m tempted to drive out to the ‘burbs for a touchy feel. More likely I’ll just order something. UPDATE: Many of these pieces are now on sale. Definitely time to shop; click through for the reduced prices.

Site Spotlight: Zara Home

Zara Home has launched online shopping. There doesn’t seem to be an exact aesthetic. Some of the items are trendy cool, like the metallic and sequin pillows. Others, like many of the bed linens, are white and somewhat frilly. Other pieces are more tailored, like the wide band, colored-rim dinnerware. It’s like they started with Anthropologie and mixed in a bit of Urban Outfitters, and some Ralph Lauren for good measure. The price points seem a little higher than the clothing; wish I had a sense of the quality. In any case, my top 12 picks, all of which I’d be happy to have in my home, especially the plexi tray table.
