ARTmonday: 12 Orphaned Artworks from OODE

Two years ago I did an interview with Marleen Kurvers, stylist and proprietor of Dutch Design Year, a design shop in Amsterdam.  Her most recent venture is GALERIE OODE, also in Amsterdam. Kurvers offers a curated selection of orphaned artworksartwork that was left in storage because the museums that owned it closed. Kurvers says, “We want to bring them back to the public so people can adopt them!”

This OODE  is exhibiting the work of Jan de Mug, a Dutch graphic designer and painter from Den Bosch. His work from the Foundation of Disinherited Goods/ Onterfd Goed are abstract, minimalistic paintings and drawings. I know a lot of people who are visiting Amsterdam this summer, so make a point to stop by Galerie Oode to see the orphaned artworks and say hi to Kurvers.

I’ve included one here along with other pieces of orphaned artworks from OODE.

ARTmonday: 10 Variations On White

This past week I’ve been working intensely on an urban development / real estate piece for the Boston Globe, interviewing a number of Boston’s top real estate developers and architects. The other day I had the pleasure of talking with Sam Norod, a principal at Elkus Manfredi. Wrapping up business chatter, we connected on other things, including art. Norod’s daughter, Hilary Tait Norod, is an artist in her late 20s who recently moved back to the East Coast. Of course I clicked over to her website to have a look.

I was drawn to her white abstract paintings. The White Series began as a challenge—with the exception of the black outlines, all the colors on the canvas have been mixed with different ratios of white paint. The shapes in the compositions develop from through layering the paint and other materials on the canvas.

Norod explains her series of white abstract paintings with this statement: White is the color produced by the reflection, transmission or emission of all wavelengths of visible light without absorption. When light reflects off of a white surface the full spectrum of color is displayed, even when we may not see it. However, in the production of white paint there is no use of color.

Here is a roundup of mostly abstract artworks, all in variations of white, and all by artists represented by Boston art galleries.

ARTmonday: 14 Artworks from the MassArt Auction 2015

Like the School of Museum of Fine Arts, the Massachusetts College of Art & Design holds a sale, in this case an auction, to benefit scholarship and academic programs. The 26th Annual MassArt Auction 2015 takes place in Boston this Saturday, April 11th at 6:30. Karen Keane of Skinner will be presiding.

In addition to the many paintings, photos, drawings, sculptures, and multimedia works for auction, there are three special commissions: a portrait sitting with William Wegman (1965) at his home in Chelsea, NYC, a custom evening gown by Jeury Roasario (2003), and a commission of products in your pantry by Rachel Perry Welty.

Here are 14 artworks I love from the MassArt Auction 2015, all open for online bids now on Paddle8 through April 10.

ARTmonday: Art Basel Miami 2014 Part II

Here’s my second batch of photos from Art Basel Miami 2014. (Here’s the link to Art Basel Miami 2014 Part I, in case you missed it last Monday.) I feel like a lot of the works were similar to last year’s Art Basel Miami 2013, though I didn’t see quite as many neon and textual pieces. I wonder if this year’s presentations were a little less edgy?

Nevertheless, I am always excited to see work by artists whose work I’m familiar with, like modern masters such as Alexander Calder, Jean Dubuffet, Kenneth Noland, and Josef Albers, or those just slightly less known, that I learned about in college art history class, like Louise Nevelson. Then there are the more contemporary artists that I learned about from exploring museums in New York, such as Nan Goldin and Damien Hirst, or more recently, Pinterest, such as Ed Ruscha.

Even if you don’t have the astronomical budget it would take to decorate your home with artwork from the top galleries that exhibit at Art Basel Miami, it is still incredible to attend. The central show at the Convention Center is really more like a museum exhibit. It’s interesting to see work by artists that form the foundation that inform today’s more contemporary artists, and our overall design aesthetic. It will help develop your eye for when you are shopping for more affordable artwork for your home.

Here are 35 pieces of modern and contemporary art from the Convention Center at Art Basel Miami 2014. If you happen to know any of the artwork I wasn’t able to identify, please share. (I actually wandered around on my own for an hour in hopes of carefully documenting everything I photographed, but I still missed a couple.) Thanks!

ARTmonday: 16 Autumnal Artworks

I feel like fall just started, but really we’re fast heading into winter, with a few frigid days already behind us. The leaves too, are almost gone. The spectacular array of golds, reds, and oranges continue to amaze, despite having spent every single one of my autumns in a four-season zone. Even driving the kids to and from school is made better by the autumnal artwork outside my windshield.

I remember, though when I took the fall foliage for granted. (Gasp.) Obviously I didn’t think much about the pretty color leaves growing up in Connecticut. Sure, I pressed brilliant red leaves between sheets of waxed paper, and probably made leaf turkeys, too, but beyond that, didn’t give fall foliage a thought. Until college.

At Connecticut College, one of my closest friends, Jessica Biales (I’ve previously blogged about her children’s artwork and stunning gold jewelry), went cuckoo over the changing leaves. She would exclaim and effuse about their beauty, leaving me as baffled as my kids probably are when I point out the amazing leaf colors along the Charles River. She wasn’t from a tropical clime.

Rather, Jessica is a New York City girl through and through, with a deep appreciation for the autumn foliage that wasn’t quite as vibrant out her bedroom window along the East River, or in Central Park. I get it now. I guess good things do come with age.

Today’s roundup features 20 autumnal artworks, from an acrylic of golden birches to a desert landscape photo to Central Park in fall, seen from Columbus Circle. There’s also a  homey kitchen, plus fall harvest still lifes, and an abstract or two in perfect fall hues. I also pulled together a similar collection for the blog on Matouk, which I’ll link to when it goes up. Enjoy not just these autumnal artworks, but the real art of autumn outside your windows.
