Montage: 20 Rooms with Crystal Ball Chandeliers

I still have not gotten around to really thinking about what sort of statement light fixture I want for the living room. When we did renovations a couple of years ago, I had the electrician wire it up for something shiny or sparkly in the smack middle of the space (recessed lights and two vintage lamps light it now). The idea was I’d search and save up for a spectacular light fixture. I have long had my eye on vintage Italian crystal floral ball chandeliers like the one in the first photo below. Usually, especially these days, my taste runs towards the more minimal and contemporary, but I can’t get my mind off these feminine lovelies. I’m sure originals are way out of reach price-wise, but I have definitely seen versions of less expensive crystal ball lights. I’ll pull together a roundup of those tomorrow.

Fine Print: 25 Best Design Books of 2012

The constant stream of books into my home may be the best perk of being a blogger. While I’ve been aiming to pare down my possessions, I still revel in the glossy pages of beautifully photographed rooms. It helps that I have a rather grand set of built in bookshelves in my living room, which looks best when full. Then of course there’s the console table behind the sofa that needs a stack, and the coffee table (a Heywood-Wakefield with a top that turns, inherited from my husband’s grandparents). A couple of these don’t squarely fall in the design category, and I don’t actually own every one, but I did browse and love them all.

Montage: 43 Kitchen Counters + Islands with Stools

Now that Meredith & Daniel’s dining spaces are set, it’s time to choose the stools for the kitchen island. The kitchen is a large, sleek space with bamboo cabinetry and floor-to-ceiling windows along one side. It opens to the living room/dining spaces on either end.

While there are a lot of very cool counter stools on the market (stay tuned for a round-up of 72 tomorrow), we’re leaning towards the Bertoia. The simple design works perfectly in the contemporary kitchen and won’t interfere with any design details in either living space. Meredith also appreciates that they have seat backs, so they’re safer for squirmy toddlers, and they’re virtually indestructible. They’re a bit pricey, but we’ve only splurged once so far (on the Saarinen dining table).

Here are 43 kitchens with counter stools. Seven have Bertoias. I noted in parentheses the stool designer where I was able. If you can name any of the other ones, leave me a comment and I’ll add it in.

Montage: 32 Kitchen Island Pendants

It seems like everyone I know is doing a renovation. Since I’m helping a friend decorate her new apartment in New York anyway, at least one other friend is benefitting from my newfound knowledge. Melissa, who actually lives in the house my husband and I gutted in Chevy Chase (she and her husband bought it when we moved to Boston), has recently purchased a new (larger!) abode. This week is her family’s yearly Cape visit. We spent yesterday morning perusing images of kitchens, trying to decide what kind of kitchen island pendants she should hang, what size they should be, and how far apart they should be spaced.

Three is a good number for kitchen island pendants (odds are always better than evens). The first and last should hang 18-inches from either end of the island. Split the difference in the middle for the third. As for diameter, we laid out different size plates at each interval on my own island to get a sense of what felt right. Of course, it will also depend on the shape and material of the light. As for how hight off the island they should hang, we didn’t get there yet.

Montage: 54 Living Rooms with Gray Sofas

Why gray sofas? First, I apologize for missing two days of blogging. I took a quick day trip to Connecticut to visit a friend. A friend who has so much faith in my taste that she has hired me to decorate her gorgeous new apartment in New York City. You didn’t realize that I’m an interior designer? I’m not! This very loyal friend is confident that through my writing and research, experience overseeing the building and renovations of my own places, and years of absorbing interior images, that I can do this. Or rather, we can do this. It’s definitely a collaboration. And really fun.

I’ll mainly be choosing furnishings. The project doesn’t involve any construction, kitchens, or bathrooms. The apartment is brand new and will be delivered finished and pristine. We  will pick paint colors, wallpapers, rugs, and furniture. The budget is similar to what I would spend if it were my own home, which makes it a lot easier. I’m nervous, but excited.

We’ve decided to go with a gray sofa in her living room. We’re thinking about a serene white and gray scheme, or white and gray with green accents. The dining room is in the same space, so we can play with that too. I’m sure I’ll be treating you to a lot of posts inspired by our deliberations and eventual decisions.

Montage: 47 Living Rooms with Chandeliers and Pendants

The renovations are finally finished in our condo, save for a few odds and ends and two extra dining room tables in the living room. I should also get around to sourcing a living room chandelier. I had the electrician add a box and switch for one in the center of the living room, between the rows of recessed lights. I originally thought I’d like a vintage sputnik, possibly in brass, but now I’m not so sure. Obviously a glittering crystal chandelier isn’t my taste, and a Lindsey Adelman fixture is way out of my price range. So, what shall it be? I found some gorgeous specimens on 1st Dibs, but I’ll save those until tomorrow. Meanwhile, let’s look at 47 different living rooms with various options, from contemporary creations and vintage sputnik to lanterns and Chinoiserie.

Montage: 54 Kitchen Banquettes

Our Boston condo is under renovation. One of the features we are adding is a banquette adjacent to the kitchen area. It seems to me that there’s been a proliferation of built-in seating recently. Unlike the booths of the ’70s (I grew up with an orange and white vinyl booth in a kitchen with oversize floral wallpaper that had a gold, brown, and orange plaid border), today’s specimens are sophisticated and sleek.

Ours will be U-shaped (not ideal, but we’re dealing with a tight space), with a pale blue and taupe chevron upholstered seat-back and pale blue faux leather seat cushion. The custom table has a walnut herringbone-pattern top on a restaurant supply style stainless base. I’ll post a photo when it’s complete. (If I’m not dead first.)

In the meantime, here are 54 very fabulous banquettes. In addition, check out my piece “The Haute Seat,” in last Sunday’s Boston Globe Magazine.

Montage: 27 Interiors with Ikat Prints & Suaznis

The i k a t trend is holding fast and furious. So much so that Elle Decor, which has been touting the look for years (House Beautiful is a huge fan too), devoted a page to it in the front of the book this month. I promise to put a product post together too, but first, a collection of rooms with ikat elements, with some suzani thrown in. You’ve probably seen a lot of these before, but hopefully there are some new images too.

Montage: 65 Palm Beach Style Rooms

With summer not far away, it’s no surprise I’ve got color on my mind. Not that I’ll ever go all out in my own house, but I definitely admire the mix of brights that designers employ in rooms with WASP style. The color, the prints, the faux bamboo, the ornate mirrors, the ugly porcelain frogs. It’s all a whirl of fun. Last month I put together two Palm Beach primers for The Inside SourcePart 1 focused on the work of designers Ellen Hamilton, Annsley McAleer, and Angie Hranowsky; Part 2 on Amanda Nisbet and Palmer Weiss. Here are more rooms with a Palm Beach aesthetic.

Following up on Friday’s post about Susanna Salk’s upcoming book Room for Children: Stylish Spaces for Sleep and Play (Rizzoli), I’ve curated some of my favorite images of spaces for kids. At the end of the post, I’ve included links to my previous kid room posts. Definitely inspires me to at least clean up, if not redecorate.
