Montage: 24 Kitchens with Built-In + Hidden Microwaves

Lately I’ve been receiving a rash of press releases from appliance companies, like GE and Miele, as well as stores that deal in appliances, such as Home Depot and Tesco. Although I’m a fan of a great appliance (I love my Bosch dishwashers, for example),  I haven’t ever really covered that segment of the home market here. I probably won’t be doing thorough cross-comparisons of stainless steel refrigerators or ultra-quiet dishwashers any time soon, I can certainly showcase well-designed kitchens that display such appliances to perfection.

So let’s start with microwaves. The design of these 24 kitchens thoughtfully incorporate its microwave ovens. The microwaves are built-in beautifully, whether tucked into an island or stacked with a traditional oven, flush with the cabinetry. Other microwaves are hidden behind doors in dedicated appliance pantries, perhaps combined with a coffee station. I’m not sure I’d want to have to open a cabinet door every time I used my microwave.

I expected to spot the microwave behind the frosted glass barn door, but the microwave in this kitchen is in the island, just under the black countertop. That desk behind the barn door is nifty though.

This sleek IKEA kitchen lines the appliances on a  wall of walnut cabinetry that is oddly perpendicular to the island. Maybe it’s just for show.

This glossy white Bulthaup kitchen features an appliance garage and two wall ovens; I think one’s a microwave.

Another kitchen in which the appliance wall is perpendicular to the  island. Check out the fridge? drawer at the bottom of the island too.

A compact plan, but the handle on the door of the microwave seems like it would impede usability at the counter.

I like the look of all the compartments in this contemporary wood kitchen, but hide-and-seek comes with a price. Doesn’t it take that much more time to remember where the appliances are, and open and shut the cabinets?

The microwave in this kitchen, which is at once classic and a touch glam, is in a tall cabinet off to the side. I like how the appliances all sport a monochromatic brushed chrome finish.

Doesn’t the microwave get more use than the oven. Nobody pulls a door over that.

Montage: 18 Rooms with Woven Wall Hangings

In November I blogged about the revival of the house plant in contemporary decor. Today, it’s about another 1970s decorating phenomenon, woven wall hangings. Woven wall hangings, be they monochromatic macrame wall hangings that look like they came from camp or more involved multicolored multi-textured fiber art extravaganzas, or even just a flat weave rug on the wall with some string pulled out (seriously, I’ve seen that), are everywhere.

Yes, you can find  funky woven wall hangings at Urban Outfitters and several beautiful hand-woven tapestries at Anthropologie, and of course Etsy has a plethora of woven wall hangings. All this weaving is actually referred to as fiber arts by serious artists, and I believe the art is thriving.

When I was visiting a friend in NYC this fall, I noticed a little place on an Upper East Side side street that offered weaving classes. I have a design-oriented friend who was so inspired by the recent spate of wall hangings in decor that she bought her own loom! I can’t wait to see the results. My mother-in-law has a huge, wonderful loom in her attic (she was a weaver before she became painter); perhaps I can get her to stage a revival and whip me something up.

The fiber wall hangings look really beautiful in isolation. I have been tempted to purchase one. But then I wonder if I could really pull off the look. Will it look too wooly? Too hippie? Too trendy? Here are 18 rooms with woven wall hangings that get it right. If you’re interested, I’ll follow up next week with a buying guide. Here’s that buying guide: Get the Look: 18 Woven Wall Hangings.

Montage: 20 Fall Tablescapes for Thanksgiving

We’ll be spending a blissfully low key Thanksgiving at home this year, free of travel and extended family dynamics (not that there’s much drama, but still, there’s something to be said to sitting down to Thanksgiving dinner in one’s pajamas).

It will just be the four of us, with a turkey prepared by my handy kitchen husband. While I love the idea of creating an earthy and modern Thanksgiving table, I won’t put in much effort since I’ll spend this spare time working rather than playing. (I will however be styling a home bar for Absolut, so stay tuned for that in the next few days.)

Just because I can’t muster the time and motivation to style a creative Thanksgiving table, doesn’t mean I don’t love to look at them. (Pulling tablescapes from Pinterest takes much less energy after all.)

I’ve been perusing Pinterest for fall tablescapes for a blog post I did for Fall River, MA-based bedding brand Matouk. Since they make beautiful linens as well as (the most comfortable) sheets, we do a fair number of tablescape stories. Recently, my Matouk co-blogger Meredith Barnett met up with Boston interior designer Gary McBournie to learn how to fold a napkin, which you should definitely check out. You can also find all sorts of how to set the table infographics on my “For Your Information” Pinterest board.

First, scroll through these 20 Thanksgiving table ideas. If I were to spend the time and creative energy styling a Thanksgiving table, it would be inspired by these autumnal displays of flowers, leaves, and harvest happiness.

Montage: 16 Modern Bathrooms With Floating Vanities

I know I’ve been posting an abundance of bathroom images lately (contrasting tile bathroom floors, tiled bathroom vanities, swatches of bathroom floor tiles), the thinking being a solution for the pink laminate bathroom counter and pink tile floor in the Florida condo bathroom will suddenly present itself.

It seems as though tiling over the counter would be most cost-effective, but I wonder what it would cost to demo the whole darn blocky vanity and put in a simple slab, which would really open up the space, or find a modestly priced floating bathroom vanity, like one of the glossy white sink cabinets from IKEA, or maybe even this Caro vanity that resembles plywood (I had obsessed over a plywood floor for the condo before settling on the cork floor). A floating vanity rather than a simple slab, would be a better for storage, obviously.

It’s true that the bathroom is fairly traditional, certainly basic, with (now) white tile and white grout, and basic white porcelain tub with glass shower doors, but I don’t think it’s a matter of choosing traditional versus contemporary bathroom style, but rather mixing the elements for a simple, clean, with maybe even a hint of Scandinavian style.

Here are 16 modern bathrooms with floating vanities.
