Montage: 18 Rooms with Bare Branch Arrangements

Two years ago, after a trip to Copenhagen, I posted 22 Rooms with Scandinavian Holiday Decor. Although this post is not about the winter holidays, it is about decorating with branches and twigs in their bare, natural state in wintertime. While it can be nice to splurge on pretty, colorful flowers to brighten a room, especially during the depths of winter, bare tree branches are an easy (free) alternative. Tree branch arrangements add drama and interesting shapes and texture to a room. Stick them in a pot or clear glass vase with water. If you want a bit more embellishment, try branches with berries, pussy willows, flowering branches, or branches with a few leaves still intact. Here are 18 Scandinavian style interiors with tree branch arrangements.

Montage: 16 Rooms with Asian Cabinets

Little known fact (if you haven’t known me forever): I was an Asian Studies/Chinese Language & Literature major in college. This otherwise rich course of study included just one Asian art history course. Said course included nothing as pedestrian as Asian furniture. I took a Chinese Art course later on, and that too was highbrow. We roamed the ceramics galleries of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, but never ventured near the furniture. (I actually don’t even know what kind of Asian furniture collection the Met has.)

Years later, here in Boston, I took a History of Furniture class at the BAC, but I don’t recall covering East or South Asian furniture in that either. Chairs from ancient Greece and Rome, yes. Louis this and that, Chippendale, of course, but nothing non-Occidental. Accidental?

That said, while I have a strong academic interest in various aspects of Asian culture, I can’t say I’ve been drawn to Asian furnishings for my house. (Perhaps if I knew the background, I’d be more included to integrate Asian pieces into the decor.) I’ve noticed lately, especially in British decor magazines, Asian furniture incorporated into Scandinavian-influenced spaces. It’s quite a modern look.

The  Chinese wedding cabinets (otherwise known as an armoire with Asian-style hardware), look quite good in black or a pop of color in all white spaces. There’s one instance below in which an unpainted, rustic wood Asian cabinet pairs perfectly with an Eames chair. And I’m intrigued by this Dynasty cabinet with lattice design. Here are 16 rooms that feature Asian cabinets in fresh ways.

Montage: Same Chair, Different Colors

You see a lot of the mismatched dining chair look in magazines and blogs, but really, how many real people do you know that live like that? Even if one half of a couple wanted to curate just the right chairs, the other would likely protest. I suppose there are some quirky beach houses, passed down  and shared with extended families, that cultivate a mismatched dining chair ensemble by default.

One could however, get away with a more streamlined approach by choosing one style of chair, and using them in different colors. I used two each of white, charcoal, and robin’s egg blue Eames chairs for Meredith’s dining room; it looks really pretty and pulled together. It’s a fun look to do with chairs for the patio, where casual and fun are called for.

Mixing molded fiberglass Eames chairs is the most commonly seen execution, probably because they have long been available in a multitude of colors. But there are plenty of other options too. Or you could even start with pale wood chairs, and use paint to accent the legs, for a “dipped” look. Or mix woods or metals. Here are 16 dining rooms that use the same chair in different colors around the table.

Montage: Artwork In the Kitchen

Since the layout of home is very open, there are no actual walls to our kitchen. However, as I’ve mentioned, the walls of our kitchen banquette area are covered with artwork. And there’s plenty of art opposite the kitchen island too, on the walls surrounding the staircase and going down the stairs. Since I spend more time than I’d like at the kitchen sink, I hung one of my favorites, a painting by my friend Lee Essex Doyle, directly across from it, so at least I have a good view.

The Florida condo has a little self-contained kitchen. So far, there is no artwork in the kitchen. On the other hand, the walls are still covered in terrible nautical-themed wallpaper. (I think I finally found someone to take it down and paint this spring.) Note to self: Add art to the kitchen in Delray Beach.  Here are 32 gorgeous kitchens, all with fine art and photography, for inspiration.

Montage: Pink Living Rooms

Contining with this week’s promised Valentine’s Day theme, and further inspired by my post of the month for the Wayfair blog, “How to Decorate with Pink,”  here are 20+ living rooms that use pink as the predominant color. Some interiors are done with pink accent walls, or even four pink walls, from pale pastel pink to hot pink; many feature pink sofas, which are especially fun in an all white room, but as we know I am partial to white rooms with color pops and Scandinavian style. I am hardly inclined to go pink myself, but these are definitely pretty in pink.

Montage: Enclosed Fireplaces

I remember growing up that every house had a red brick fireplace enclosed in awful cloudy glass with brass trim. It looked just terrible, but I guess the thinking was that by containing the heat, the fire would help actually heat the room—ambience be damned. For heat, it’s probably more effective to do a wood stove type of thing (see my freestanding fireplace post); my in-laws have one in their kitchen in Connecticut and it’s so toast.

Poking around my Pinterest boards for fireplaces, I am happy to report that the glass enclosed fireplace has received a much needed update. Apparently they’re called authentic balanced flue gas fires. A balanced flue is a glass fronted gas appliance, which is completely sealed from the room into which it’s installed and vents directly to an outside wall. Air is drawn in from the outside for combustion purposes increasing its efficiency through an outer pipe, whilst the inner pipe vents the combustion gases outside. Got that?

The 17 fireplaces below seem to be of the balanced flue variety, though I’m no expert. In any case, they’re all cozy and I’d love to install one into my non-working fireplaces in Boston.

Montage: 32 Brass Kitchens

Following up on my last shopping post 34 Brass Accents, here’s a roundup of kitchens with brass details: brass handles and drawer pulls, brass lighting, brass ranges and hoods, and even one with brassy cabinetry. Brass hardware could be a good way of freshening up a white kitchen. A lot of the kitchens here are black; while black and brass is striking, it’s too much drama for me personally. I would however adore a gray kitchen and would be happy to experiment with brass fixtures. I also love the way the brass accents look with the natural wood details on the island in the Brooklyn townhouse featured in Dwell. Have a look for yourself; would love to know your preferences. Also, have a look at my post on Lamps Plus, “5 Ways to Add Brass Lighting in the Kitchen,” which includes a roundup of some great brass light fixtures (it will be live at 2 pm ET today).

Montage: 20 Kids’ Sleeping Nooks

I’ve done a handful of kids bedroom posts, but there is no end to the cuteness, not to mention variations. Today I got pretty specific, pulling together 20 sleeping nooks (or alcoves) for kids, inspired by the round-up of modern kids rooms I did today for Design Milk.

I love a good built-in. So much sleeker and more efficient than furniture. And for a kid it’s pretty much heaven. I mean, who doesn’t want to sleep in a fort? I used to rig blankets up in my bunk beds, but I had the top bunk. This meant I didn’t reap the full benefit since I could never figure out how to get sheets to hang from the ceiling. I also used to move the dresser out from the wall so I had a private play space. Anyway, sleeping nooks are kind of an all in one play/sleep space. Love them.

For more good kids’ design, peruse my past posts 43 Kids’ Rooms, 65 Rooms with Bunk Beds, and 27 Little Boys’ Bedrooms. If you’re in the market for a new kid’s bed, check out the styles in 18 Bunk & Loft Beds and 34 Beds for Boys. Finally, follow my Kids’ Spaces board on Pinterest!

Montage: 30 Outdoor Showers

We’re heading out for the summer on Friday, the day after my son graduates from the Montessori school where he spent nine years of his little life. I cannot believe I am going to have a junior high school kid. Yikes. But first, summer . . . I don’t think I ever pulled together an outdoor shower roundup for you, despite my intentions. One of the highlights of our Cape house, as I know I’ve mentioned, is the bathtub. We also have a decent outdoor shower on a deck off said bathroom, overlooking the woods. I’ll add a photo to this post once we get out there. My in-laws outdoor shower is lovelier, with wisteria overhead and an ocean-view. Sigh. For now I’ll scroll through these to get in the mood.

Montage: 25 Concrete Sinks, Showers, and Tubs

It’s like all of Pinterest is being paved over in concrete. It’s everywhere, polished and textural. It’s possible that the more aren’t actually concrete; perhaps some sort of stone. Not sure; some may actually be limestone. (Any experts out there?)  I’m not much for the rugged ones, but I love the feel of polished concrete. Our fireplace mantle on the Cape is done in the most wonderful shade of jade green colored concrete, made by a local artist. The hearth is flush with the oak floor, and I love to stand barefoot on it. So smooth and lovely. The current look though, isn’t colored concrete. It’s gray concrete, pretty much on any surface, in any room. Here are 25 concrete bathrooms.
