Montage: 18 Rooms with Bare Branch Arrangements

Two years ago, after a trip to Copenhagen, I posted 22 Rooms with Scandinavian Holiday Decor. Although this post is not about the winter holidays, it is about decorating with branches and twigs in their bare, natural state in wintertime. While it can be nice to splurge on pretty, colorful flowers to brighten a room, especially during the depths of winter, bare tree branches are an easy (free) alternative. Tree branch arrangements add drama and interesting shapes and texture to a room. Stick them in a pot or clear glass vase with water. If you want a bit more embellishment, try branches with berries, pussy willows, flowering branches, or branches with a few leaves still intact. Here are 18 Scandinavian style interiors with tree branch arrangements.

Montage: 16 Rooms with Asian Cabinets

Little known fact (if you haven’t known me forever): I was an Asian Studies/Chinese Language & Literature major in college. This otherwise rich course of study included just one Asian art history course. Said course included nothing as pedestrian as Asian furniture. I took a Chinese Art course later on, and that too was highbrow. We roamed the ceramics galleries of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, but never ventured near the furniture. (I actually don’t even know what kind of Asian furniture collection the Met has.)

Years later, here in Boston, I took a History of Furniture class at the BAC, but I don’t recall covering East or South Asian furniture in that either. Chairs from ancient Greece and Rome, yes. Louis this and that, Chippendale, of course, but nothing non-Occidental. Accidental?

That said, while I have a strong academic interest in various aspects of Asian culture, I can’t say I’ve been drawn to Asian furnishings for my house. (Perhaps if I knew the background, I’d be more included to integrate Asian pieces into the decor.) I’ve noticed lately, especially in British decor magazines, Asian furniture incorporated into Scandinavian-influenced spaces. It’s quite a modern look.

The  Chinese wedding cabinets (otherwise known as an armoire with Asian-style hardware), look quite good in black or a pop of color in all white spaces. There’s one instance below in which an unpainted, rustic wood Asian cabinet pairs perfectly with an Eames chair. And I’m intrigued by this Dynasty cabinet with lattice design. Here are 16 rooms that feature Asian cabinets in fresh ways.

Montage: Same Chair, Different Colors

You see a lot of the mismatched dining chair look in magazines and blogs, but really, how many real people do you know that live like that? Even if one half of a couple wanted to curate just the right chairs, the other would likely protest. I suppose there are some quirky beach houses, passed down  and shared with extended families, that cultivate a mismatched dining chair ensemble by default.

One could however, get away with a more streamlined approach by choosing one style of chair, and using them in different colors. I used two each of white, charcoal, and robin’s egg blue Eames chairs for Meredith’s dining room; it looks really pretty and pulled together. It’s a fun look to do with chairs for the patio, where casual and fun are called for.

Mixing molded fiberglass Eames chairs is the most commonly seen execution, probably because they have long been available in a multitude of colors. But there are plenty of other options too. Or you could even start with pale wood chairs, and use paint to accent the legs, for a “dipped” look. Or mix woods or metals. Here are 16 dining rooms that use the same chair in different colors around the table.

Montage: Artwork In the Kitchen

Since the layout of home is very open, there are no actual walls to our kitchen. However, as I’ve mentioned, the walls of our kitchen banquette area are covered with artwork. And there’s plenty of art opposite the kitchen island too, on the walls surrounding the staircase and going down the stairs. Since I spend more time than I’d like at the kitchen sink, I hung one of my favorites, a painting by my friend Lee Essex Doyle, directly across from it, so at least I have a good view.

The Florida condo has a little self-contained kitchen. So far, there is no artwork in the kitchen. On the other hand, the walls are still covered in terrible nautical-themed wallpaper. (I think I finally found someone to take it down and paint this spring.) Note to self: Add art to the kitchen in Delray Beach.  Here are 32 gorgeous kitchens, all with fine art and photography, for inspiration.

Montage: Pink Living Rooms

Contining with this week’s promised Valentine’s Day theme, and further inspired by my post of the month for the Wayfair blog, “How to Decorate with Pink,”  here are 20+ living rooms that use pink as the predominant color. Some interiors are done with pink accent walls, or even four pink walls, from pale pastel pink to hot pink; many feature pink sofas, which are especially fun in an all white room, but as we know I am partial to white rooms with color pops and Scandinavian style. I am hardly inclined to go pink myself, but these are definitely pretty in pink.
