Get the Look: 30 Cute Cosmetic Cases

Last week I pulled together a collection of cute cosmetic cases, “Kiss & Make Up” in the Boston Globe. I generally like to do a travel-related roundup in the summer, and I had already done weekend bags last year.

Mostly, though, I was inspired by a particularly cute cosmetic case by Deux Luxe, that the publicist had sent me back in the winter—the Anguilla cosmetic case in jade green emblazoned with exotic birds. I love the look. Unfortunately it didn’t make it into the Globe, but I’ve included it here (#17), along with 29 other cute cosmetic case finds.

Bostonians, pay attention to #1, #9, and #18 by ultra preppy, Brookline-based design label Ame & Lulu. I’m kind of attached to #2 from Catseye London. Adorable, though maybe channels too much of a crazy cat lady vibe? There’s a doggie one as well (#21). And if you’re more of a boho girl, Target has a couple of great Coachella-worthy makeup bags (#5 and #8).

Browse through for a new one; you know yours is smeared with gunk. Me? I still use the iconic brown & white striped cosmetic bags and toiletry case from Henri Bendel, a long-ago gift from an ex boyfriend’s mom. And yeah, it’s a bit worn.

Get the Look: 20 Handbags with Fringe

People have pretty particular feelings about fringe. I get it. Fringe can be all too hippie chick, or hokey cowgirl (now that’s fringe gone woefully astray). My husband is not a fan of fringe. He doesn’t even like the the lone leather strip of fringe that hangs from each zipper of my beloved Rebecca Minkoff Mini Mac Crossbody Bag. (I have teal, for special color occasions, but I just got a grey one that I use multiple times a week.)  My editor at the Boston Globe Magazine has rejected a fringe fashion style page. (No matter, I’m turning one into my editor at the newspaper instead.)

Following up on yesterday’s post Street Style: 28 Fashions with Fringe, I sourced 20 fringe handbags for you. In addition to the black & white Tribale Fringed Bag by Lanvin (LOVE but not willing to sell my soul), I’m kinda grooving on the simple and affordable #3 fringe handbag. Tell me if you have any fringe-y plans for yourself this fall.

Get the Look: Every Type of Birkenstock Sandal

After putting together Friday’s post on the revival of Birkenstocks, and having a late birthday lunch with friends (thanks Marcie & Deb!), I headed to The Tannery to try on Birkenstocks. As they’re hardly sexy, I felt like I was trying on shoes that an college roommate left by the door. But, once I channeled the women in the street style photos, I was on board. So I turned my attention to how Birkenstocks actually felt on my feet.

The leather of the Arizona sandals were a little stiff for me, (though likely fine for most anybody else), and I didn’t even bother trying on the Gizeh thongs (I can only wear flip flops with ribbons, not leather, between my toes). It’s too bad, because I really like the white Arizona Birkenstocks. They remind me of my white rubber platforms slides by Patrick Cox from the mid-90s (which I actually still have and should perhaps resurrect).

The white Birkenstocks are so obviously a cute style statement and would not be mistaken for the schleppy misguidedness. Look, if you’re going to wear Birkenstocks because they’re back (and by back I mean, by those who matter, i.e., Phoebe Philo, Marc Jacobs, Jenna Lyons), then you’re going to have to cultivate the total look. (I can do a post with specific clothing picks too if anyone’s interested.)

Back to the try-ons. I also slipped on a slouchy pair of mocha suede Arizona sandals with rose gold buckles (nice styling touch), which also happened to be labeled “soft footbed.” Bingo. Pure comfort. (For sizing, go down one.) I could definitely get on board wearing these. Thing is, I haven’t been into earth tones the past ten years.

Back home, my search for size 36 black suede Arizonas turned up “out of stock” messages. Not willing to languish on a wait list, I ordered the Arizona Soft Footbed Suede Sandal in Velvet Gray from Nordstrom’s. (By the way, the Nordstrom Half-Yearly Sale is in progress.) Admittedly, it is going to be harder to pull off elegance in gray suede than crisp black, but so be it. Besides, I’ve been totally into my gray Madewell jeans, so this could all be good.

And, fact is, I’m headed to the Outer Cape for most of the summer, where looking just so is just not.

Get the Look: 22 Digital Print Dresses

Following up on yesterday’s street style post “Style Right Now: 14 Digital Print Looks,” I pulled together 22 digital print dresses for you. (Actually, a couple of them are long T-shirts, but you could totally wear one as a summer dress if you’re petite, or thrown over a bathing suit.) Of course I won’t actually be wearing any (with red hair and freckles I’ve got enough going on without adding a print) but I really do love the digital print look, especially the landscape-y, photographic ones. I totally adore #1 and #14 is pretty cool, but then again, so is everything she does.

Get the Look: Boston Condo by Ana Donohue

I put together furniture and accessories so you can re-create the living room, dining room, and desk area of a the condo I featured as yesterday’s blog post: “Design Diary: Boston Pied-a-Terre by Ana Donohue.” Interior designer Ana Donohue decorated the two bedroom in Boston’s Back Bay for clients who live full time in Bermuda. Of the pieces here, some are exactly what Ana used, others are more affordable options. (Interior photos by Michael J. Lee)
