Montage: 32 Interiors by Boston Designers, in Honor of Marathon Monday

Today’s post is in honor of the horrific explosions that occurred at the Boston Marathon finish line yesterday. (I live just a few blocks from that spot; thankfully my family and friends are safe.). I have pulled together an assortment of rooms designed by Boston interior designers. I’ve had the honor of working with all of them; these images are from stories I wrote over the years for various publications—Boston Globe Magazine, Boston Home, Stuff, and New England Home. And, of course, they were shot by our wonderful assortment of Boston-based photographers, and assigned by esteemed Boston editors, Anne Nelson, Veronica Chao, Rachel Slade, Brooke Foster, Erica Corsano, Paula Bodah, and Kyle Hoepner. Finally the homeowners–friends, neighbors, and others I’ve been privileged to meet, who have opened their gardens and homes to us.

After twelve years, Boston has become my home. It’s certainly my children’s home; they’ve lived here almost their entire lives. It’s been a wonderful time for us, free of tragedy after a very stressful few years in Washington, D.C. There for just a few years, but during both of my pregnancies, we suffered with the nation through 9/11, anthrax, and locally, the Sniper. I am sad that Boston has been marred by this tragedy now, on an iconic day. My thoughts are with the people who were hurt (and worse), and the little boy who lost his life too early. Thank you my friends who have been helping hold down the fort until I can get home, and thank you to my husband and his colleagues for their dedication.

Montage: 56 Spaces Decorated with Giraffes

I think the first time I really noticed a giraffe from a design perspective (besides when I was at the zoo), was almost three years ago when my friend’s baby was chewing on a rubber one. You know it—the ubiquitous Sophie the Giraffe Teether by Vulli. (If you’re not up on tot stuff, guarantee you’ll notice one tomorrow.) When Martha Stewart shared the cover of the September issue with a practically life sized stuffed giraffe in her grandchild’s nursery, I knew I was past due for a post. So, now six months later, I’ve finally pulled one together. My punishment for delay is your treat — I have over 50 images for you. I know a lot of other blogs have noticed the trend too, but I hope a bunch of these are new for you. There’s quite a few nurseries with giraffes, but plenty of grownup spaces too.

Montage: 17 Spaces with Sheepskin Rugs

Although I’m not a big animal skin fan, I do love the cozy feel of a woolly sheepskin rug underfoot. I recently went to IKEA and picked up one each for my sons’ bedrooms; now it’s the first thing their little feet hit when they touch the floor. (I was tempted by the gray versions for the sofa, but more on that tomorrow.) One of my sons pleaded the extra large one, so he could put it atop his bed so he could sleep directly on it, but I thought things would get a little too sweaty. I think I may need one for my side of the bed on the Cape. They really do feel delicious.

Designer Spotlight: David Hicks

I recently worked with Ashley Hicks, designer and son of legendary designer David Hicks, on an article for eBay’s new lifestyle site, The Inside Source, “Ashley Hicks on His Father, David,” to promote his new book, David Hicks: A Life of Design. The book is worth an actual read, rather than a simple flip to look at the pretty pictures.

What struck me most, besides Hicks’ incredibly privileged, glam lifestyle, was how many of his design innovations endured. A number of features seen in his room throughout the ’60s and ’70s, are au courant today.

Montage: Twin Beds

As we head into summer, I’ve been making plans with friends to visit me on the Cape. I’ll be out there full time starting mid-June , and I’ll no doubt be craving company. (On the bright side, I’ll have plenty of time to blog.) In any case, summer means summer houses, which means visitors, which means guest rooms. Here is a collection of rooms outfitted with two beds. Some are shared kids’ rooms, but most are spaces appropriate for grown ups, and plenty lovely enough to consider spending the night.

Escapes: Post Ranch Inn, Big Sur

I learned about the Post Ranch Inn in Big Sur, a heavenly spot on the edge of the earth (or at least the West Coast) from interior designer, Robin Pelissier, who owns a design business and little shop called Robin’s Nest in downtown Hingham, Mass. I had been soliciting suggestions for romantic honeymoon spots for “The Lovers’ Go-To Guide” in the Boston Globe Sunday Magazine’s Valentine Day issue. While Big Sur had always connoted the great outdoors to me (i.e., hiking, bird watching, etc.), I was never much interested. But this is a spa, and an altogether different story.
