Montage: Artwork In the Kitchen

Since the layout of home is very open, there are no actual walls to our kitchen. However, as I’ve mentioned, the walls of our kitchen banquette area are covered with artwork. And there’s plenty of art opposite the kitchen island too, on the walls surrounding the staircase and going down the stairs. Since I spend more time than I’d like at the kitchen sink, I hung one of my favorites, a painting by my friend Lee Essex Doyle, directly across from it, so at least I have a good view.

The Florida condo has a little self-contained kitchen. So far, there is no artwork in the kitchen. On the other hand, the walls are still covered in terrible nautical-themed wallpaper. (I think I finally found someone to take it down and paint this spring.) Note to self: Add art to the kitchen in Delray Beach.  Here are 32 gorgeous kitchens, all with fine art and photography, for inspiration.

Fine Print: Best Design Books of 2013

One of the best perks of my job is the opportunity to review books. Although I’m wired 24/7, I love, love, love books; especially rich, glossy, design books. Luckily, I have substantial bookshelves lining my living room, so I kind of need them too. This year I received a number of impressive coffee table books, which line the shelves, and are stacked on the coffee table and the console table behind the sofa. I’m often running behind, so I haven’t had time to do individual blog posts on many of these, but that doesn’t mean I don’t think they’re great. Here’s a quick roundup of the best design books of 2013.

Montage: 30 Bathrooms with Modern Vanities

Last week when I was in Delray Beach, I had the tiles in the pink master bathroom reglazed. Definite improvement! The nautical navy wallpaper is still firmly intact, and the vanity still stands in all it’s pinky flesh tone glory. I suppose we’ll paint the vanity white; I already bought new brushed stainless knobs at IKEA. That still leaves the countertop, sink, and faucets. We’ll need to explore some cost-effective countertop ideas; perhaps a remnant of some sort. I pulled together 30 examples of bathrooms with contemporary vanity & countertop combos for inspiration. Any ideas for me?

On Trend: 35 Arrays of Arrows and Targets

I’ve been collecting images of arrows and targets for a while; I think I began to notice the trend in the fall. I thought it was a natural outgrowth of the trend of using feathers in decor, but I actually think it is part of The Hunger Games hoopla. In any case, I did a a piece on the arrow trend for The Inside Source earlier this year, and profiled blogger Amanda Hanley, in the Boston Globe Magazine. Put off by the high prices of vintage arrows, Hanley makes and sells arrows through her webshop Quivver. I, along with everyone else, saw The Hunger Games over the weekend, and as such felt inspired to post the roundup. UPDATE: I can’t believe I forgot about my own display of targets… They’re by Tracy Melton, and they’re hanging in our house on the Cape. It’s the first photo on the 23 Wall Installations post.
