ARTmonday: 36 Obscured Portraits of Women

If you follow the ARTmonday posts,  you’ll know that as much as I love abstract art, I am especially drawn to artwork featuring female figures. Among my many posts highlighting specific female painters or more frequently, photographers, who create quirky or elusive images of women (Cig Harvey, Viviane Sassen, Natsumi Hayashi), I’ve also curated a number of roundups, including Women Thinking, Women In the Kitchen, Figures in the Landscape, Women In Water, and Girls At Play. (For more, you can also peruse my Pinterest boards Female Figures in Art, PortraitsNudes.)

I have so many images of women turning their backs on the camera, that I thought for sure I did a post of those, but I can’t find it, so maybe not. Today’s post features 36 portraits of women whose faces are obscured in some way. The overall image might be blurry, her head could be wrapped in twigs (or a shower curtain!), perhaps her hair is in her face, or she’s wearing a blindfold. Or, the image might show what could have been a perfectly straightforward rendering, but then he or she dripped paint over the visage, or whited out all traces of personality.

Some of these obscured portraits of women are cloaked in mystery, others are silly, and still others, a tad subversive. I find them all appealing. (I left out the more disturbing of the finds this time around.)

ARTmonday: 12 Retro Style Campers

Everywhere you turn there’s a vintage retro camper, or glamping scene. Granted the two are totally different, but still, two sides of the same coin. While I could be convinced to glamp, you won’t catch me in a camper, ’50s style chic or otherwise. I am, however, charmed by some of the images. I also kinda love the idealization of the old-fashioned camping trip, in artwork mind you, not in real life, thank you very much.

A few months ago Rise Art asked me to curate a summer-themed art collection—”Summer Is Coming“—which features some camp and road trip inspired artwork. One of my favorites from that collection is this first piece, a technicolor blur of a family camp scene.

I searched for other similar images, but wound up finding illustrations mostly vintage campers, so I figured I’d just go with it.

ARTmonday: Bowls From the Kitchen Cupboard

I’ve been collecting cute and colorful tabletop and kitchen trinkets, like dipped wooden spoons, little patterned bowls, graphic tea towels, flowerpots,  and such, because this summer I’d like to attempt to take more original photographs for the blog. I’ve recently attempted to style a few shots (like the ones for the Raddish Kids post), and I think they’ve come out decently. And, of course, I’ve been practicing my still life tablescape and flower photos on Instagram almost daily. The last think I need is more stuff to store, but I figured the items would be good inspiration.

That reminded me of these artworks of bowls that I’ve been saving for a while, and figured today is as good a time as any to post them.

ARTmonday: Jenny Prinn

I noticed last week that Jenny Prinn, who describes herself as “mommy, artist, and stylist,” started following StyleCarrot on Instagram. (I’ve been trying to beef up my account, so I hope you’ll give me a follow too.)  When I clicked through to Jenny Prinn’s Instagram, I was thrilled to discover that she’s a Maine artist whose work I’d admired on Serena & Lily

Jenny Prinn’s abstracts are colorful and uplifting. Some are truly abstract; others are abstracted landscapes. Her statement says she is “intrigued by the fleeting moments and feelings in life that are often overlooked or forgotten.” She creates “the small pulsing, transient moments and sensations that strike deep within our core for just a moment and then are gone.” She works in acrylic and mixed media on canvas.

The artwork is beautiful, and the prices accessible. Most of these are still (at the moment) available for purchase. (I may need one for the Delray Beach condo.)

ARTmonday: 15 Bicycle Artworks

No deep thoughts today, or even particularly serious artwork. Just some fun images of bicycles. Over the weekend it was almost warm enough, by Boston standards (and by that I mean it was over 40 degrees and sunny), to think about getting my bike down from its hanging place and going for a ride on the Esplanade. I settled for a walk It’s wet and muddy, with dirty, frozen mounds of snow still scattered, but I’m hopeful. For now (unless I become a different person and hit the new Soul Cycle),  I’ll just enjoy these 15 bicycle artworks.

ARTmonday: Winter Trees

Back in April, I published ARTmonday: 22 Trees.  When I realized I kept noticing artwork with trees, I decided to feature more wintry subjects. And since we got our first big snow in Boston, now’s the perfect time. Trees are really great if you’re working with a large space. Landscape murals (oh, I must do a Montage post with these!) or digitally printed oversize canvases can make a big impact, especially in a spare space.  The icicles hanging from the birch tree in your backyard could look great blown up. Ocean waves for that matter also look cool; very relaxing. Ikea carries an oversize ocean wave canvas print that my friend Deb, who’s an architect, hung in her Florida condo; it has a funky South Beach effect. I may be getting off track… here are beautiful winter tree artworks that might instill some appreciation of nature and colder temps. Perhaps they’ll inspire you?

ARTmonday: 13 Photographs from Lumitrix

There’s a new online gallery that deals exclusively in contemporary photography—Lumitrix. Each print offered is a limited edition and retails at $80 ($220 framed). The London-based  gallery currently represents just 13 photographers, but each is brilliant. Among them, Matilda Temperley (fashion designer Alice Temperley’s younger sister) focuses on dancers, while 23-year-old artist Kannagi Khanna wows with a series featuring celebrity images juxtaposed against Indian women. Here are some of my Lumitrix favorites.

ARTmonday: 10 Geometric Portraits by Matthew Bourbon

While browsing one of my favorite art galleries (at least online, since I’ve never actually been there), Kenise Barnes Fine Art in Larchmont, NY, I discovered the work of artist Matthew Bourbon. (I also pulled images from Darke Gallery.)  Bourbon was born in the Bay area, and after college at UC Davis, earned his Masters of Fine Arts at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. Bourbon is currently an associate professor in Texas.  He is also an art critic and writer.

His artist’s statement says he is “interested in . . . how information is revealed or obscured” and “how it affects the narrative or possible interpretations of story.” I love the colors and geometric patterns and organic shapes that replace the figures heads or other body parts. It’s portraiture and abstract art in one.

ARTmonday: Jaime Derringer Art, Abstract Drawings and Paintings

As I’ve mentioned before, I’m a regular contributor to Design Milk,  the best contemporary design site on the web, founded and headed by Jaime Derringer. It turns out, that not only is Jaime super great at her job, she’s also an artist. I knew she did various graphic works for various collaborations, but the other day I saw she had pinned these fantastic, colorful abstract artworks—and they’re hers. I love the clear, bright palette and mix of blocky and curvy shapes. I think I may even pick one out for the condo in Delray Beach. Jaime Derringer art would certainly pop on white.

ARTmonday: 27 Ocean Wave Artworks

It’s July 1, the start of the week of the Fourth of July, a big deal around here. My boys consider it the best day of the year (and not just because we let them have soda, which is basically never allowed). We celebrate with a picnic at Corn Hill beach, which my husband has done his entire life. It’s a definite slice of Americana, with many groups of families and friends that span multiple generations gathering on picnic blankets, with grills, hors d’oeuvres, and cocktails. If it’s warm the kids run in and out of the ocean waves (actually,it’s a  bay beach), and later there are sparklers, s’mores (my favorite part), and fireworks. I’ll definitely snap some Instagram pics (follow StyleCarrot). In the meantime, here are 27 ocean wave artworks. And speaking of waves, has anyone else been noticing a lot of wave prints in wallpaper and textiles?
