ARTmonday: Winter Works Show at Bromfield Gallery

Over the weekend I went to First Friday in SoWa, an arts district in Boston.  Mainly I went to meet Sydney Licht, who was in town for her solo show “Canned and Contained,” beautiful contemporary still life paintings at Chase Young Gallery, a top Boston art gallery.  The works are wonderful, and  gallery co-owner Sarah Young is so lovely.

I wandered through a number of other galleries, including Bromfield Gallery which has a very appealing (and crowded) exhibition called Winter Works. It’s a  juried show with lots of small pieces by many artists, all priced from $100 to $1,000. (There are many affordable artworks here.) There were several I was very tempted to purchase, and I may go back for at least one. These are perfect holiday gifts. All the pieces are worth a look and there are enough styles ad mediums (abstract & still life, collage & encaustic) to suit many different types.

Here are 32 artworks from Boston art gallery Bromfield Gallery’s Winter Works show.

ARTmonday: Architecture in Art

Last night I pulled together 20 examples of architecture in art for today’s post. As I scrolled through Pinterest pinning hundreds of images that appeal, I realized that one of the categories that make my heart flutter most is architecture. (You can look at my Architecture I and Architecture II Pinterest boards and see if you feel similarly.)

Artwork sucks me in, street style compels me to lose weight and dress with more verve, and food photos makes me wish I had more time and energy to really cook, but the architectural images draw me in more profoundly. Sure, it’s the design aspects in part—the corrugated metal, black stained siding, expanses of glass, pointy rooftops, and placement in the surrounding landscape transport me to another place, another time, another life I could have. Or maybe, just a house I might someday build.

So just for that reason, the realization that looking at sublime examples of contemporary dwellings elicits a response deeper than browsing well-designed living rooms and adorable, furry animals, here are 20 occurrences of architecture in art, including photographs, paintings, illustration, sculpture, and collage.

ARTmonday: 36 Obscured Portraits of Women

If you follow the ARTmonday posts,  you’ll know that as much as I love abstract art, I am especially drawn to artwork featuring female figures. Among my many posts highlighting specific female painters or more frequently, photographers, who create quirky or elusive images of women (Cig Harvey, Viviane Sassen, Natsumi Hayashi), I’ve also curated a number of roundups, including Women Thinking, Women In the Kitchen, Figures in the Landscape, Women In Water, and Girls At Play. (For more, you can also peruse my Pinterest boards Female Figures in Art, PortraitsNudes.)

I have so many images of women turning their backs on the camera, that I thought for sure I did a post of those, but I can’t find it, so maybe not. Today’s post features 36 portraits of women whose faces are obscured in some way. The overall image might be blurry, her head could be wrapped in twigs (or a shower curtain!), perhaps her hair is in her face, or she’s wearing a blindfold. Or, the image might show what could have been a perfectly straightforward rendering, but then he or she dripped paint over the visage, or whited out all traces of personality.

Some of these obscured portraits of women are cloaked in mystery, others are silly, and still others, a tad subversive. I find them all appealing. (I left out the more disturbing of the finds this time around.)

ARTmonday: 12 Retro Style Campers

Everywhere you turn there’s a vintage retro camper, or glamping scene. Granted the two are totally different, but still, two sides of the same coin. While I could be convinced to glamp, you won’t catch me in a camper, ’50s style chic or otherwise. I am, however, charmed by some of the images. I also kinda love the idealization of the old-fashioned camping trip, in artwork mind you, not in real life, thank you very much.

A few months ago Rise Art asked me to curate a summer-themed art collection—”Summer Is Coming“—which features some camp and road trip inspired artwork. One of my favorites from that collection is this first piece, a technicolor blur of a family camp scene.

I searched for other similar images, but wound up finding illustrations mostly vintage campers, so I figured I’d just go with it.
