Montage: 25 Concrete Sinks, Showers, and Tubs

It’s like all of Pinterest is being paved over in concrete. It’s everywhere, polished and textural. It’s possible that the more aren’t actually concrete; perhaps some sort of stone. Not sure; some may actually be limestone. (Any experts out there?)  I’m not much for the rugged ones, but I love the feel of polished concrete. Our fireplace mantle on the Cape is done in the most wonderful shade of jade green colored concrete, made by a local artist. The hearth is flush with the oak floor, and I love to stand barefoot on it. So smooth and lovely. The current look though, isn’t colored concrete. It’s gray concrete, pretty much on any surface, in any room. Here are 25 concrete bathrooms.

Montage: 24 Rooms That Use Baskets Right

I’m not sure yesterday’s woven basket post was such a hit. I know, like I said, I’m not a huge basket fan either. Perhaps I really should have provided the Montage first. Because woven baskets can be just the right touch, especially in a sophisticated ensemble. Look .  .  .

Montage: 40 Kitchens in Every Color of the Rainbow

I’m down in Florida last week, and although the condo still needs work, I haven’t quite motivated to do anything. I had the pink tiles and tub in the master bath reglazed, but that’s about it. Mostly I’m waiting for the contractor to say he can start. We’re not doing a lot—the main objective is to put down a new floor, tear off the wallpaper, and repaint. Those are the must-do projects.

Kitchen Before Blue Backsplash

The kitchen is fine, once we get the nautical wallpaper down. (Big thanks to my husband who ordered the perfect white shade and installed it, replacing the painfully outdated navy Venetian blind.) The appliances are not fancy, but they work (though honestly, how does anyone live full time with a fridge with a top freezer?) The countertops are white tile, and there’s a miniature backsplash of varying shades of blue tile. Not ideal, since they’re cobalt rather than Tiffany blue, but we’ll make it work. Right now the cabinets are an ugly, very glossy,  bone color with even uglier round black knobs. Obviously the knobs are an easy fix. But what color to paint the cabinets. Probably just white, but it’s fun to imagine . . .

Montage: 25 Fresh White Interiors with Crystal Chandeliers

Today, the topic of my blog post on Style Illuminated is turning on the romance in the bedroom with a crystal chandelier. Traditional rooms aren’t the only ones in which a dose of crystal can do some good. Sleeker spaces, especially those bathed in white look fabulous with sparkling crystal dangling from above. Case in point, these 25 rooms.

Montage: 32 Rooms with Hearts

I am totally not a believer in Valentine’s Day. Too artificial. BUT, I happen to have a bunch of photos of rooms with hearts saved on my hard drive, so I’ll share. Sorry it’s so late (again). Spent the day on an airplane. In rainy Florida now. Happy Valentine’s Day. xoxo

Montage: 47 Bedrooms with Upholstered Headboards

As I’m wrapping up the details on Meredith and Daniel’s apartment, I’m also sorting through my overabundance of images in iPhoto. In the mass cleanup are a multitude of upholstered beds. If you recall, the design process started with the master bedroom, because Meredith had a specific look in mind. Said look revolved around a great upholstered bed. We opted for a silhouette with gentle curves, white canvas upholstery, and nickel nail heads. As you can see from these rooms, there are so many different variations on shape, pattern, color, and detailing. Tomorrow I’ll round up specific styles for you to shop.

Montage: 32 Kitchen Island Pendants

It seems like everyone I know is doing a renovation. Since I’m helping a friend decorate her new apartment in New York anyway, at least one other friend is benefitting from my newfound knowledge. Melissa, who actually lives in the house my husband and I gutted in Chevy Chase (she and her husband bought it when we moved to Boston), has recently purchased a new (larger!) abode. This week is her family’s yearly Cape visit. We spent yesterday morning perusing images of kitchens, trying to decide what kind of kitchen island pendants she should hang, what size they should be, and how far apart they should be spaced.

Three is a good number for kitchen island pendants (odds are always better than evens). The first and last should hang 18-inches from either end of the island. Split the difference in the middle for the third. As for diameter, we laid out different size plates at each interval on my own island to get a sense of what felt right. Of course, it will also depend on the shape and material of the light. As for how hight off the island they should hang, we didn’t get there yet.

Montage: 34 Work Spaces with Swivel Chairs

Now that my workspace has been relocated to the living room, I’m thinking of getting a new desk chair. The one I’ve been using from Hold Everything is literally falling apart. I’m uncertain whether to opt for a stylish dining/upholstered chair or for a more ergonomically-correct, but not as living room-y, office chair. I think a rolling swivel chair may be too office-y for my workspace (I’ll post a photo of it tomorrow), though some of these look lovely. I love the Eames Management chair, but at over $2,000, it’s not likely to make an appearance at my house.

Montage: 31 Freestanding Fireplaces

Although it hasn’t really been cold (at least in Boston), it is February, so if I’m going to post on fireplaces it seems like an appropriate time. I love the look (and functionality) of the freestanding gas fireplaces that have become so popular, especially the industrial aesthetic of the pipe. I don’t love the ones that hang from the ceiling. Some of these are probably wood stoves; some aren’t actually free-standing, but have a pipe instead of a traditional chimney. One’s even outdoors, which, admittedly is a whole different story.

Montage: 47 Living Rooms with Chandeliers and Pendants

The renovations are finally finished in our condo, save for a few odds and ends and two extra dining room tables in the living room. I should also get around to sourcing a living room chandelier. I had the electrician add a box and switch for one in the center of the living room, between the rows of recessed lights. I originally thought I’d like a vintage sputnik, possibly in brass, but now I’m not so sure. Obviously a glittering crystal chandelier isn’t my taste, and a Lindsey Adelman fixture is way out of my price range. So, what shall it be? I found some gorgeous specimens on 1st Dibs, but I’ll save those until tomorrow. Meanwhile, let’s look at 47 different living rooms with various options, from contemporary creations and vintage sputnik to lanterns and Chinoiserie.
