ARTmoday: Trees by Patricia Busso

I’m feeling kind of zen today and these Patricia Busso birch tree paintings are reflecting my mood. Patricia Busso is a Boston-based artist with a studio in the South End. (Her bio also says she’s a math teacher.)

I came across her one of her encaustic pieces at the SoWa First Friday event in December, hanging in a juried group show of small works that I thoroughly enjoyed. When I looked her up to see more I found these birch tree artworks.

Some of these birch trees remind me a bit of illustrator Patricia Busso in blue. I’ve also long been a fan of Congdon’s hot pink birch trees—Birch Forest No. 7.

Busso started out as a photographer, but when her camera broke on the first day of an art retreat in the woods of British Columbia, she purchased paints and got to work. I’m not sure if any of these are the result of those efforts, but it seems to me they could very well be.

Here are 10 birch tree artworks by Patricia Busso.

ARTmonday: 13 Photographs from Lumitrix

There’s a new online gallery that deals exclusively in contemporary photography—Lumitrix. Each print offered is a limited edition and retails at $80 ($220 framed). The London-based  gallery currently represents just 13 photographers, but each is brilliant. Among them, Matilda Temperley (fashion designer Alice Temperley’s younger sister) focuses on dancers, while 23-year-old artist Kannagi Khanna wows with a series featuring celebrity images juxtaposed against Indian women. Here are some of my Lumitrix favorites.

ARTmonday: 12 Artworks from Uncommon Goods

I discovered Brooklyn-based site Uncommon Goods, which launched back in 1999, when I worked for Store Adore. I perused it all the time, especially for environmentally-conscious and handcrafted gift options. For some reason it had fallen off my radar for a while. They emailed me recently. I learned that the company’s lowest paid worker makes 50 percent above minimum wage—as good a reason as any to start shopping the site again—and that they donate to a number of worthy non-profits, including organizations for women, hunger, and the environment. I was also reminded of its selection of selection of cute gifts, including a whole bunch of whole bunch of personalized gifts, like jewelry, pillows, and books. There’s also affordable artwork. I posted a dozen of my favorite artworks from Uncommon Goods below.

ARTmonday: Matthew Brandt’s Lake Photos

I really love these funky landscape photos by Matthew Brandt. He’s an L.A.-based photographer who studied at Cooper Union and UCLA, and has gotten a lot of attention lately. He made last year’s Forbes “Top 30 Under 30 in Art & Design list compiled by Jeffrey Deitch, Director of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles and artist Chuck Close. There was also a great article about him in Elle Decor. A number of important museums own his work, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art,  Brooklyn Museum of Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and Elton John does too. I actually just learned about Matthew Brandt because he’s speaking at MassArt in Boston on Oct. 30.

These images are part of Matthew Bradt’s “Lakes and Reservoirs” series. After shooting his Western landscapes,he heads to the darkroom (a photographer who still uses a darkroom!) to soak prints in water he has collected from those same lakes. A print might bathe for a few days or a few months, and the results vary depending on the length. Some look like traditional landscapes gone awry in the darkroom (or attacked by a bottle of bleach); others have a techno illustrated feel, while others resemble dreamy pastel pieces.

I’m in love, but guessing they’re a bit over my budget. Wah.

ARTmonday: Sally Gall Photographs in Nature

I can’t believe I’ve never posted on New York City-based photographer Sally Gall. I learned of her work back when I was an editor at a Travel Holiday magazine in New York, just out of college. I have the first of her two books, The Waters Edge (Umbra Editions / Chronicle Books, 1995), and I believe I even purchased one of her prints as a gift for someone (though maybe not; I can’t find that image anywhere). Sally Gall photographs nature close up and far away, beautiful and eerie, intense and quiet. Here is a sampling of her work throughout her career.
