ARTmonday: 15 Bicycle Artworks

No deep thoughts today, or even particularly serious artwork. Just some fun images of bicycles. Over the weekend it was almost warm enough, by Boston standards (and by that I mean it was over 40 degrees and sunny), to think about getting my bike down from its hanging place and going for a ride on the Esplanade. I settled for a walk It’s wet and muddy, with dirty, frozen mounds of snow still scattered, but I’m hopeful. For now (unless I become a different person and hit the new Soul Cycle),  I’ll just enjoy these 15 bicycle artworks.

ARTmonday: Women Thinking

I think it’s been awhile since I’ve done a roundup of women. If you follow this column, you know I am enamored of artwork picturing the female form, both clothed and undressed. I am particularly drawn to images exuding a sense of melancholy. These 25 artworks picture women sitting, many hugging their knees, seemingly lost in thought. Some are well-known oil paintings by artistic masters, others fashion photographs, some illustrations, and others simply pieces by contemporary artists found around the web, including Saatchi Online, Etsy, and the artist’s own websites. Which woman moves you?

ARTmonday: Winter Trees

Back in April, I published ARTmonday: 22 Trees.  When I realized I kept noticing artwork with trees, I decided to feature more wintry subjects. And since we got our first big snow in Boston, now’s the perfect time. Trees are really great if you’re working with a large space. Landscape murals (oh, I must do a Montage post with these!) or digitally printed oversize canvases can make a big impact, especially in a spare space.  The icicles hanging from the birch tree in your backyard could look great blown up. Ocean waves for that matter also look cool; very relaxing. Ikea carries an oversize ocean wave canvas print that my friend Deb, who’s an architect, hung in her Florida condo; it has a funky South Beach effect. I may be getting off track… here are beautiful winter tree artworks that might instill some appreciation of nature and colder temps. Perhaps they’ll inspire you?

ARTmonday: 12 Artworks from Uncommon Goods

I discovered Brooklyn-based site Uncommon Goods, which launched back in 1999, when I worked for Store Adore. I perused it all the time, especially for environmentally-conscious and handcrafted gift options. For some reason it had fallen off my radar for a while. They emailed me recently. I learned that the company’s lowest paid worker makes 50 percent above minimum wage—as good a reason as any to start shopping the site again—and that they donate to a number of worthy non-profits, including organizations for women, hunger, and the environment. I was also reminded of its selection of selection of cute gifts, including a whole bunch of whole bunch of personalized gifts, like jewelry, pillows, and books. There’s also affordable artwork. I posted a dozen of my favorite artworks from Uncommon Goods below.

ARTmonday: 27 Ocean Wave Artworks

It’s July 1, the start of the week of the Fourth of July, a big deal around here. My boys consider it the best day of the year (and not just because we let them have soda, which is basically never allowed). We celebrate with a picnic at Corn Hill beach, which my husband has done his entire life. It’s a definite slice of Americana, with many groups of families and friends that span multiple generations gathering on picnic blankets, with grills, hors d’oeuvres, and cocktails. If it’s warm the kids run in and out of the ocean waves (actually,it’s a  bay beach), and later there are sparklers, s’mores (my favorite part), and fireworks. I’ll definitely snap some Instagram pics (follow StyleCarrot). In the meantime, here are 27 ocean wave artworks. And speaking of waves, has anyone else been noticing a lot of wave prints in wallpaper and textiles?

ARTmonday: 22 Trees

It’s true. The flowers are coming up, and blooming. But it’s the trees I’ve been appreciating. I love the pungent green buds this time of year, the small start of each leaf. Many of these tree artworks, I suppose. are somewhat wintry. Even so, let’s celebrate tree art today, for spring, renewal, and all that hopeful stuff.

ARTmonday: 26 Swimmers

With a pool outside my window, and a tiny glimpse of ocean yonder, this collection of pools, divers, and swimmers, pulled from my Pinterest boards, seems an appropriate post for today. Yes, I’m in Florida again. Don’t hate me!

ARTmonday: 25 Mountains + Icebergs

I’ve been sorting though my  art b0ard on Pinterest because it is overflowing with over 1300 pins. I already have separate boards for abstracts, sculptures & installations, nudes (though I need to pull this down because I keep getting warnings), female figures, and photography, but now I need to subcategorize even more, so I’ve created landscapes, and will probably move on to still lives and portraits. I’ve noticed I have an abundance of contemporary artwork, especially illustration, picturing mountains and icebergs. This is hardly a surprise, given the current craze for all things “geo” (triangles, facets, polyhedrosn,etc.). They’re appealing, and season appropriate, so here you go.

ARTmonday: TurningArt

Sorry for the late night post. Spent the snowy weekend organizing cabinets and hanging with friends, including interior designer Alison Sheffield and photographer Stephen Sheffield, when I guess I should have been blogging. Then today, had a whole bunch of style stories due to the Boston Globe. I was kinda thinking of skipping out early tonight to bed, but I just got an email from a Boston area company called TurningArt, so here we go.

The Boston-based start-up, founded by 35-year-old seasoned webpreneur Jason Gracilieri, is a sort of Netflix for art. For $10/month, the site will send you a framed print of an original artwork of your choosing, which you can swap as often as you like. Shipping is free and and membership dollars get banked as ArtCredit, which can be used to buy prints or original pieces from the site.

After a quick survey about your taste (literal vs. abstract), your way of life (city vs. suburbs), and how you approach it (conversation starter vs. laugh inducer), TurningArt assigns you a “Personal Curator.” Mine’s name is Mari. “She” curated  ten pieces for me to kickstart my collection. The pieces were a bit more representational and traditional than my actual leanings. Here’s  a sampling of artwork I found by browsing that I could live with:
