It’s true that most of us have stone countertops that can withstand heat, but I think (preferably) modern trivets still have a place in the kitchen.
Not long ago I put a Pyrex baking dish straight from the oven onto our granite countertop. It was wet. The entire dish, salmon included, exploded. Seriously. Exploded.
Many kitchens, including mine, mix countertops, using a different material for the island than for the rest of the workspaces. The ship-like cherry wood countertops on either side of our stove are scorched from the tea kettle. (Not my doing.) I leave a cork trivet nearby now.
And unless you have have a marble-topped Saarinen tulip table you don’t want to be putting hot dishes on your dining table.
We never seem to have enough hooks, whether it’s in the closet, on the back of the bathroom door, or in the kitchen, I’ve been meaning to add to by my desk for my tote bag too, instead of always draping it on the back of my chair. I don’t want it to stand out, so I’ll need to find simple modern wall hooks.
With the holidays upon us, not to mention what’s sure to be a snowy winter, adding hooks to inside the closet, by the door in the entry, and pretty much all over the mudroom is always a good idea.
Here are 38 mostly modern wall hooks from StyleCarrot partners and other shops, many fun, all functional.
I absolutely love the layering and mix of textures in the living room of interior stylist Pella Hedeby.
The Swedish blogger behind Stil Inspiration recently swapped out her white wood pallet coffee table on casters for this earthy vintage bench by Danish modern furniture designer, Borge Mogensen. The added texture and wood tone provides a rich contrast to all the white, and brings out the flecks in the rug.
I also love the stack of Aalto-style stools used as a coffee table; looks like she may have painted a couple of them. And of course, I always adore an oversize piece of art, especially if it’s a black and white photograph.
Finally, the large square acrylic box, Stuff Box by HAY, with the coffee table books. Even the subtle tones of the books, black, gray, blush, are well thought out. Boston-based stylist Kara Butterfield taught me the value of placing objects in clear vessels years ago, which I wrote about here.
At this rate I may tire of copper before I acquire a single piece. (Although I already own copper wastebasket I bought from the Martha Stewart catalog and have been using for years in our powder room.) A month ago I featured 24 rooms with copper pendants here on StyleCarrot, followed up by a dozen rooms with copper pendants on Design Milk, and a dozen copper accessories. Expanding on the copper accessories roundup, here are 40 modern copper home furnishings finds. And be sure to see my 20 copper picks on Houzz later this month too. Told you.

Raising the bar a few dollars. . . Last Wednesday it was Gifts for Her Under $25. Do I see see $50? Splurge a little on your sister or your BFF. These presents under $50 are all seriously cute. I’d love the earrings. The tape holder is tres chic, but not sure my desk is glam enough. The note blocks are cool though. And if you’re not totally into camo fashion, but want a taste of the trend, the cosmetic pouch is perfect.
