Montage: 30 Kids Rooms with Teepees

Teepees, wigwams, play tents  (whatever you want to call them) have been trending for a rather long time.  However last week, the Wall Street Journal proclaimed them a trend:  Teepees: The New Urban Hideaway.  I’m not sure why a newspaper would be so slow to catch onto this (it’s not like there’s a three-month lead time). No matter, they’re still going strong. We had a refrigerator box playhouse for a while; admittedly not nearly as chic. But that was a dozen years ago.

The teepee is great because it looks good not only in a kids room, but in adult spaces too. As you can see from these 30 rooms with teepees, they work well in white Scandinavian interiors, minimalist black and white living rooms, nurseries with traditional childrens bedroom furniture, and of course colorful playrooms. You can even erect one outdoors.

I was obsessed with building forts as a kid, always enclosing my bunk beds with blankets, and wishing I had a way to hang a sheet from the ceiling. My kids, too, used to love taking all the blankets they could gather and draping them over chairs and ottomans to create fun enclosures. There’s definitely something satisfying, and practical too, about a kid constructing a hideaway on his own. That said, it’s also nice to have a ready-made private quiet space. Wonder if my boys are too big for one now?

Montage: 40 Kitchens in Every Color of the Rainbow

I’m down in Florida last week, and although the condo still needs work, I haven’t quite motivated to do anything. I had the pink tiles and tub in the master bath reglazed, but that’s about it. Mostly I’m waiting for the contractor to say he can start. We’re not doing a lot—the main objective is to put down a new floor, tear off the wallpaper, and repaint. Those are the must-do projects.

Kitchen Before Blue Backsplash

The kitchen is fine, once we get the nautical wallpaper down. (Big thanks to my husband who ordered the perfect white shade and installed it, replacing the painfully outdated navy Venetian blind.) The appliances are not fancy, but they work (though honestly, how does anyone live full time with a fridge with a top freezer?) The countertops are white tile, and there’s a miniature backsplash of varying shades of blue tile. Not ideal, since they’re cobalt rather than Tiffany blue, but we’ll make it work. Right now the cabinets are an ugly, very glossy,  bone color with even uglier round black knobs. Obviously the knobs are an easy fix. But what color to paint the cabinets. Probably just white, but it’s fun to imagine . . .

Montage: 20 Penguins and Polar Bears

I’ve been meaning to do a post about giraffes—I’ve been seeing them everywhere—but since it’s holiday time, polar bears and penguins seem more suitable. And in fact, I’ve been seeing a proliferation of penguins in decor lately too. We even have a penguin etching that we purchased a few years back at the SMFA sale that we still need to get framed; there’s an empty spot over the banquette waiting for it. Happy penguin + polar bear season to all.

Montage: 43 Kitchen Counters + Islands with Stools

Now that Meredith & Daniel’s dining spaces are set, it’s time to choose the stools for the kitchen island. The kitchen is a large, sleek space with bamboo cabinetry and floor-to-ceiling windows along one side. It opens to the living room/dining spaces on either end.

While there are a lot of very cool counter stools on the market (stay tuned for a round-up of 72 tomorrow), we’re leaning towards the Bertoia. The simple design works perfectly in the contemporary kitchen and won’t interfere with any design details in either living space. Meredith also appreciates that they have seat backs, so they’re safer for squirmy toddlers, and they’re virtually indestructible. They’re a bit pricey, but we’ve only splurged once so far (on the Saarinen dining table).

Here are 43 kitchens with counter stools. Seven have Bertoias. I noted in parentheses the stool designer where I was able. If you can name any of the other ones, leave me a comment and I’ll add it in.

Montage: 27 Little Boys’ Bedrooms

As my friend (and new interior design client) starts thinking about transitioning her two-year-old to a big boy bed (baby #2 is due in August), we’ve been exploring cute non-crib rooms for kids. I have a lot of photos of great rooms with two twin beds, but I’m holding those back for another time. These rooms are one-bed-only spaces, but include a mix of toddler beds, twins, and doubles.  Also, you won’t find any tired, kitschy kid themes here either. Sports bedrooms, sailboat bedrooms, no way. A well-designed room with human decor is the way to go.  A few might look familiar, but hopefully there are plenty of new rooms too.

Montage: 44 Rooms with Candlesticks and Candelabras

Ever since I got back from my design trip to Copenhagen last fall, I’ve been really interested in candlesticks. Candles are a key element in Scandinavian interiors, the fire adding both warmth and light over the long winter months of shortened days. I fell for smooth, brightly colored wooden pairs in the airport outpost of the department store Illums Bolighus, and located a set on eBay when I got home. (More beat up than smooth, but very inexpensive.) A lot of these interiors are Scandinavian in style, though not all. I bet you will recognize some specific candle holders and candelabras below. Which can you identify?
