Fine Print: Eddie Ross Modern Mix

The new Eddie Ross Modern Mix design book by Eddie Ross with Jaithan Kochar (Gibbs Smith, October 2015) is a design book to put on your holiday list to give and to get. From the appealing, vibrant cover, all the way through from beginning to end, the photos and tips kept me engrossed, flipping back and forth to re-study the images.

Eddie Ross is the East Coast Editor of Better Homes & Gardens and a former editor at House Beautiful, Martha Stewart Living, and Food Network. He’s also a trained chef. Mostly though, he’s a self-proclaimed hoarder of beautiful things. I love minimalism but I am absolutely wooed by Ross’s collections of tabletop and home furnishings, but more than that I’m smitten with the way he puts them together.

In addition to all the objets, we see Eddie Ross in action, thrifting and styling. There are tips running throughout this design book too. Some go beyond the usual advice (get to estate sales early) to tricks for restoring ceramics and such. I am a design book hoarder, true, but this one I love. It’s staying on my coffee table so I can leaf through.

I may actually have a please-be-my-friend crush on Eddie Ross. I follow him on Instagram (@eddieross) and he seems like a fun and happy guy. He is making his way through the country on his book tour, and will be in Boston this Thursday, October 15th at Hudson in the South End 6:30-8:30.

Gift Guide: Mother’s Day

Nothing like waiting until (almost) the last minute to find a Mother’s Day gift, let alone put together a Mother’s Day Gift Guide. I usually order fresh flowers, which are easy, last minute proof, and a special treat (though kinda pricey.)

I was born on Mother’s Day, so I spent many years worrying that I was going to be cheated out of a holiday. Turns out we don’t make a big deal about Mother’s Day, though I do insist we honor it in some way, just in case my sons’ future wives expect a fuss. Last thing I want to do is raise boys that badmouth honoring moms. It’s actually nice that my birthday falls around that time, because it makes both occasions a lot more meaningful.

I especially didn’t want the boys to be at preschool and elementary school and spread the word that it’s a Hallmark holiday, and therefore not important, etc. I can just imagine the call I would get from the school. Believe me, there have been similar occurrences regarding the tooth fairy. I kid you not. And here I thought it was discussions of God that we told them to avoid. Who knew.

I always send my mother-in-law flowers for Mother’s Day. Winston Flowers in Boston does an amazing job finding florists in other areas that align with their aesthetic. I send my own mother flowers too, though sometimes it’s cookies or brownies from a local (very yummy) company Dancing Deer. If I were to buy them non-consumable presents, or get tokens of appreciation for friends, I’d opt for sweet, design-y things, like the ones arrayed here, and above in Mother’s Day Gift Guide Part Deux. Trinket boxes or trays, bubble bath, a breezy scarf, pretty notebooks, an art print, bud vase, canvas tote, or straw clutch. (Feel free to use this as a birthday present guide too.)

It might be too late to order some of these (though not all!), but hopefully it will at least give you ideas so you can get into a store and shop efficiently.

Fine Print: 25 Best Design Books of 2012

The constant stream of books into my home may be the best perk of being a blogger. While I’ve been aiming to pare down my possessions, I still revel in the glossy pages of beautifully photographed rooms. It helps that I have a rather grand set of built in bookshelves in my living room, which looks best when full. Then of course there’s the console table behind the sofa that needs a stack, and the coffee table (a Heywood-Wakefield with a top that turns, inherited from my husband’s grandparents). A couple of these don’t squarely fall in the design category, and I don’t actually own every one, but I did browse and love them all.

Fine Print: Victoria Hagan Interior Portraits

Victoria Hagan’s design book Interior Portraits (Rizzoli, October 2010) came out back in October, but I’ve been so busy these last few months I’m just catching up on my reading now. I’ve been a fan of Hagan’s work for years. Her environments are quiet, yet strong, perfectly balanced and sophisticated. I especially admire her sense of composition, serene aesthetic, and way she incorporates statement artwork.

Designer Victoria Hagan Blue Library

This blue library is much more saturated in color than Hagan’s usual spaces. The blue/green walls have an ombré effect. I adore oversize artwork and that teal velvet chair.

Designer Victoria Hagan White Living Room With Statement Artwork

A great big canvas adds life and color to a neutral room, picking up on the colors and lines of the rug.

Designer Victoria Hagan Brown Living Room With Statement Art

A double contemporary portrait paired with an Oriental carpet and luscious cranberry velvet sofa.

Designer Victoria Hagan Study With Wood Paneling And Blue Sofa

A photo adds movement to this wood-panelled study.

Designer Victoria Hagan Living Room With Green Drapes

I love how the drapes on the French doors correspond to the fireplace surround.

Designer Victoria Hagan White Hi Res Office

A room with a view, and an extra large mirror to reflect all that light.
