Montage: 29 Rooms With Faux Animal Heads

A couple of weeks ago I featured Boston area designer Kristina Crestin’s own powder room, replete with faux animal heads as the “Room to Love” in the Boston Globe Address section. She had purchased a safari’s worth of these papier-mache animal sculptures from West Elm for a client, but when they didn’t work out she decided to use them herself. The effect is whimsical and rustic, and led to no shortage of potential headlines, none of which we could use. (“Turds With Friends,” “Ass Menagerie,” and so on.)

Antlers and actual taxidermy (real animal heads) are still a thing among a certain set, and always will be, but fashion forward interior designers  and design-y blogger types are much more into faux animal heads of late. Papier mache zebra heads, resin deer heads in neon hues with sparkly antlers, rattan steer heads, and plush tiger, elephant, and puppy dog heads are kind of everywhere, especially in well turned out nurseries. (Triple point score of the walls are black too.)

Here are 29 rooms that showcase faux animal heads in bedrooms, nurseries, living rooms, kitchens, libraries, and of course, Krestin’s powder room. Be on the lookout tomorrow for a killer (sorry) faux animal head buying guide.

Montage: 20 Kids’ Rooms with Storage Lockers

I know I did kids’ rooms already this week with 20 Sleeping Nooks, but it’s a kids room kinda week. Not just because I’m on the Cape where I love my kids’ rooms (one is absolutely orange, the other turquoise), but because I also rounded up contemporary kids rooms for Design Milk on Wednesday, and today, I guest blogged for Wayfair with 10 Kids’ Storage Solutions. Definitely click over there; it’s a useful post with great photos. Below, I’ve concentrated on one specific storage solution for kids’ room—storage lockers.

Storage lockers look really cute in kids’ bedrooms and playrooms, and obviously help control clutter (assuming you actually use them). I love the way it adds color to these rooms too. I was thinking of getting the white locker from IKEA for our Delray Beach condo as a console in the living area, but my husband is not a fan. Tall, school-style lockers are great for coats, obviously (I’ve seen mudrooms decked out with them), and for dress-up clothing. Or, you could do a whole row of them, locker room style, as an armoire-like substitute for a closet. Cubby style storage lockers are obviously better for toys. A low storage locker makes a good nightstand between two single beds. Get more ideas below.

Montage: 20 Kids’ Sleeping Nooks

I’ve done a handful of kids bedroom posts, but there is no end to the cuteness, not to mention variations. Today I got pretty specific, pulling together 20 sleeping nooks (or alcoves) for kids, inspired by the round-up of modern kids rooms I did today for Design Milk.

I love a good built-in. So much sleeker and more efficient than furniture. And for a kid it’s pretty much heaven. I mean, who doesn’t want to sleep in a fort? I used to rig blankets up in my bunk beds, but I had the top bunk. This meant I didn’t reap the full benefit since I could never figure out how to get sheets to hang from the ceiling. I also used to move the dresser out from the wall so I had a private play space. Anyway, sleeping nooks are kind of an all in one play/sleep space. Love them.

For more good kids’ design, peruse my past posts 43 Kids’ Rooms, 65 Rooms with Bunk Beds, and 27 Little Boys’ Bedrooms. If you’re in the market for a new kid’s bed, check out the styles in 18 Bunk & Loft Beds and 34 Beds for Boys. Finally, follow my Kids’ Spaces board on Pinterest!

41 (More) Rooms with Poufs

My pouf post,  34 Rooms with Poufs,  has proven the most popular on the site. So, seeing as the trend is still going strong, I’ve curated a whole new batch of interiors featuring Moroccan leather, knitted, and even wicker poufs, plus a couple of bean bag varieties.
