Foodie Friday: Mother’s Day Lunch by Norman Fine Catering

We don’t really make a big deal out of Mother’s Day, which is fine by me, because it’s actually my birthday too. And, for the record, I do expect some special attention for that. This year my friend Deb invited us to a lovely brunch at our amazing house (she’s an architect who turned a wreck in Davis Square into a simple, contemporary marvel). It was a total treat to spend the early afternoon with friends, not just because the company was engaging the Champagne sublime, but because local chef Norman Fine of Norman Fine Catering cooked the food. I can’t even describe to you how delicious it was. And since I’m not a food writer, I won’t even try. I will just say it was superb. Feast your eyes on my Instagrammies.

Did yesterday’s post Montage: 30 Pretty Pastel Interiors convince you to go soft? Some of those rooms weren’t sickeningly sorbet, there was a richness to them, I thought. Still, I understand if you have qualms. You could easily add a touch of pastel home furnishings here and there however. A sky blue chaise, peachy table linens, a mint fridge. Montage: 30 Pretty Pastel Interiors

When browsing J.Crew the other day, I noticed an abundance of pastel products. There’s always a healthy serving of pretty pastel rooms on Pinterest, and given my obsession with Scandinavian decor, especially white rooms sprinkled with pops of color, they’re always on my radar. I also just put together a post on pretty bedrooms for girls for the Matouk blog that posted yesterday, for which I had to slog through many a pink room to find the gems. Anyway, pastel style does seem to be a thing. Here are 30 pretty pastel interiors. Love ‘em, or not so much? I like to look at them. Not sure I could live in one. Would definitely do a guest room in such a scheme. My favorite here is the very first. The combinatino of violet and mint is inspired.

ARTmonday: Winky Lewis

I have fallen hard for Portland, Maine-based photographer Winky Lewis. The portraits of her children are reminiscent of the photographs of my very first photo crush, Sally Mann. They’re also somewhat similar to photos taken by my friend Kathleen Schwartz of her fairy tale children. They also remind me of a photograph that hangs in my bedroom; the first portrait I ever purchased (you can see it at the end of this post). I love evocative black and white portraits of children and their fairy tale lives. Winky Lewis’ photographs are stunning and insightful. She also happened to photograph my friend Sharon Kitchens‘ homestead for a Boston Globe story I wrote, but I’ll save that for another time.

I think this is the first portrait I ever purchased. I bought it in the early ’90s at an auction at Little Red Schoolhouse / Elizabeth Irwin, a progressive school in NYC, whose alumni includes artists and artists’ kids. I remember seeing works by Francisco Clemente there. Those were certainly not in my budget. This photo was taken by one of the women who worked in the office of the school; it pictures her nieces. I still love it. It hangs above my bedside table.

Montage: 22 Exterior Glass Doors

This very minute I’m in the quad awaiting the annual Maypole dances at my son’s school. It’s gorgeous out —green, flowering, and sunny. When the kids were small, I’d perch on the playground bench equipped with my laptop. These days, it just doesn’t seem worth the effort since conditions are less than ideal. Although we live on the “garden” level, first floor Back Bay, Boston condos aren’t outfitted with much in the way of outdoor space. On a whim, we looked at two houses across the river in Cambridge. One had such a lovely city-like patio and yard, I was tempted.

I’ve pulled together a collection of 22 exterior spaces all accessed by wonderful (mostly) glass exterior doors. There are the obvious sliding doors and French doors, but these are unique wood slat and metal-frame versions. I’ve included plenty of traditionally-hinged doors, though their shape, size, and applications are anything but run-of-the-mill. An accordion door is incredibly appealing, and sadly not so common in the Northeast. (One could do accordion room dividers, however. I’ve seen a few amazing photos of these on Pinterest.) Interiors with sliding barn doors have become hugely popular; I found one outdoor example, included here. The most amazing exterior doors, aside from having a garage door in your living room, which I’ve always thought was cool, are glass pivot doors. I’ve found a number of gorgous examples for you. Every category could easily get its own post—which do you like best?
