Montage: Swings

I’ve been noticing swings in interiors rather a lot over the last year. The plexiglass ones have a retro ’60s look and the rattan harken back to the ’70s. I prefer the cleaner, more architectural designs. I sprinkled in a few summery outdoor ones too. Brian Andriola

Design Diary: Tommy Hilfiger’s NYC Apartment

Harper’s Bazaar shot Tommy Hilfiger, his wife Dee and baby Sebastian at the family’s newly re-furbished duplex at The Plaza. They purchased it in 2008, and tried to sell it last year – for a mere $50 million – but now seem thrilled with the space, which the designer describes as”old-world atmosphere complementing the old-world [...]

Design Diary: Patricia McDonagh for This Old House

Earlier this year interior designer Tricia McDonagh emailed me about a project she had been working on with “This Old House.” To help celebrate its 30th anniversary season, they wanted to help the community where it got its start. The show’s crew worked alongside affordable housing nonprofit Nuestra Comunidad to to renovate a vacant, foreclosed [...]

Montage: Afghans

Designers  elevated granny chic on spring and fall runways with afghans fashioned as um, fashion. Not sure anyone would actually wear a crochet square getup (other than Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, who’ve been spotted with granny square scarves), but the look is taking hold in decors for the under 60 set. A lot of these [...]

Design Diary: Asian Infusion

This duplex condo in a 19th century townhouse in Boston’s South End neighborhood is the home of restaurateur Matt Burns, a partner in The Aquitaine Group (Aquitaine, Gaslight, Union Bar & Grille). I visited to write  “The Italian Job” for the Boston Globe Sunday Magazine. The interiors were designed by Meichi Peng, whose well-balanced work [...]

Montage: Elephants

I don’t have as many images as I like to present in my montage posts, but I wanted to get this  up while the trend was still on the upswing.  In absence of image overload, I added captions to each. M. Design • Designer Molly Luetkemeyer’s master bathroom includes an elephant she found in India. [...]

Montage: Bicycles

Bicycles. I’ve got more than any city apartment should. Four, plus three scooters. In my living room. Unsurprisingly, they don’t look nearly as lovely as the single bikes shown in these interiors.  Bikes seem to be the prop of the moment though. I’ve snapped photos of them used in displays in boutiques and restaurants all [...]

Montage: Ladders

Ladders have been popular in interiors for a while now, not just to access books, but in bathrooms as towel racks. Even stepladders have been appropriated, sometimes with a tray on top, as side tables. To accompany my piece,  “Trendlet: Ladders” on The Inside Source, I’ve put together an expanded montage of ladder decor. Zen [...]

Fine Print: Designers’ Homes in CFDA Book

WWD reports that the CFDA (that’s the Council of Fashion Designers of America for those of you not in the fashion know) and glossy book publisher Assouline are publishing American Fashion Designers at Home, a coffee-table book that will showcase homes from over 100 of its members. It’s due out in September ($65, to benefit [...]
