Site Spotlight: StyleUp Launches

Last week, over a gargantuan slice of carrot cake at Flour Bakery, I caught up with StyleUp founder Kendall Herbst. We worked together a couple of years ago at NBC New York’s fashion blog, The Thread. She’s a former Lucky fashion editor ,who’s now an MBA student at MIT and web entrepreneur. Her well-scrubbed looks infused with unassuming urban sophistication (yup, so Lucky), is the perfect model for real life women who’ve got someplace to go (or wish they did).

With a keen eye (Kendall handpicks every one of the 40+ daily looks), StyleUp prescribes outfits based on a quickie style survey you fill out, adjusting for regional weather, taste, and lifestyle. I signed up a few weeks ago, and have pretty much loved every image suggested. The site’s in beta, but functions well in its simplicity. I wish I could see the looks recommended for girls that have a different style preference than I—after all, there might be a day I leave the comfort of my sofa—but I’m guessing that will come.

Below are my favorite looks so far, both from my feed and Kendall’s.

StyleUp pinpoints a look for you to wear the next day, based on the weather forecast and your personal style, taking into consideration the feedback you submit on past outfits.

FALL 2012 STREET STYLE MAXI SKIRT CHUNKY SWEATER

Love the gray pleated maxi, long sweater, fur scarf, and silver jewelry. I’m all about comfort; love how she makes this work. Am I too short for this?

CORINNE BAILEY RAE STREET STYLE STRIPE DRESS FLANNEL BLAZER

UK singer- Corinne Bailey Rae hits the street in a stripey-dress, windowpane gray flannel blazer, Swiss dot stockings, and flat oxfords. If I were to re-create, I’d go with black opaque tights and a black bootie. But she rocks this.

DARK RED PANT WHITE SILK BLOUSE LEOPARD PRINT TOTE

Harper’s Bazaar editor Joanna Hillman, absolutely pulled together in oxblood trousers, black-trimmed blouse, leopard tote, and sky high Mary Janes.

WORKDAY STYLE SKIRT TIGHTS CARDIGAN

Totally adorable look, if I had an office to go to. Alas, I don’t.

CASUAL CHIC STYLE GRAY BLAZER LOOSE FIT PANT

My kind of comfort. The gray suiting is a nice touch. Think I’ll try it.

MINT SKINNY JEANS CAMEL COAT PASTEL AND NEUTRAL STYLE

Minty goodness toned down with camel accessories. A great combo.

Love the plaid under the oxblood cable knit sweater. Camel trench atop polishes perfectly. I’ve never worn cropped jeans with a bootie—I will now.

Huge Alexa Chung fan. This tall girl can rock a ballet flat. I’d lose the Edwardian ruffles.

I wouldn’t personally do an polka dot jacket, but the overall look is really cute. I adore the top handle bag with the black trim. Wonder who makes it.

Ashley Olsen in tweed Chanel, leggings, and very fringe-y bag.

Blake Lively in a similar color palette. Love the look—black skinnies, studded low boot, and Cynthia Vincent blazer in Fair Isle kinda print. That messy, perfect hair.

If you’re doing a floral pant, this is the way, paired with black + classic touches.

Not sure about navigating in such skinny spikes, but a tailored white blazer ovwer black skinnies is irrefutably practical and chic. Topknot’s kinda high.

Totally, totally, totally me. Leggings, loose stripey sweater, wedges, and oh that studded-bottom bag.

Another look I’d channel without hesitation. The blue on navy is excellent. Another bag I want. J.Crew has cords that color in store right now.
